Rates rise at weekly Treasury auction (AP)
WASHINGTON ? Interest rates on short-term Treasury bills rose in Monday's auction to the highest levels since August.
The Treasury Department auctioned $29 billion in three-month bills at a discount rate of 0.04 percent, up from 0.025 percent last week. Another $27 billion in six-month bills was auctioned at a discount rate of 0.07 percent, up from 0.06 percent last week.
The three-month rate was the highest since three-month bills averaged 0.045 percent on Aug. 8. The six-month rate was the highest since these bills averaged 0.08 percent on Aug. 16.
The discount rates reflect that the bills sell for less than face value. For a $10,000 bill, the three-month price was $9,998.99 while a six-month bill sold for $9,996.46. That would equal an annualized rate of 0.041 percent for the three-month bills and 0.071 percent for the six-month bills.
Separately, the Federal Reserve said Monday that the average yield for one-year Treasury bills, a popular index for making changes in adjustable rate mortgages, was unchanged at 0.11 percent last week, the same as the previous week.

Paul A. Lombardo published an essay ?Legal Archaeology: Recovering the Stories behind the Cases? in the Fall 2008 issue of the Journal of Law, Medicine, and Ethics. ?It reminded me of the wonderful chapters in this volume of ?health law stories.? ?Here are some excerpts that may be of interest:?
?Every lawsuit is a potential drama: a story of conflict, often with victims and villains, leading to justice done or denied. Yet a great deal, if not all, that we learn about the most noteworthy of lawsuits ? the truly great cases ? comes from reading the opinion of an appellate court, written by a judge who never saw the parties of the case, who worked at a time and a place far removed from the events that gave rise to litigation.
Rarely do we admit that the official factual account contained in an appellate opinion may have only the most tenuous relationship to the events that actually led the parties to court. The complex stories ? turning on small facts, seemingly trivial circumstances, and inter-contingent events ? fade away as the ?case? takes on a life of its own as it leaves the court of appeals.
How can a law professor correct this bias? ?Here are some of Lombardo?s suggestions:?
The best starting point for doing legal archaeology is the case record itself. We all begin our investigation of cases by reading an appellate opinion. With some extra effort, we can retrieve the records and briefs that the judges relied on as they wrote that opinion. Of course, the case record that is printed for submission to an appellate tribunal will include only a small portion of the documents that make up the lawsuit?s paper trail.
Much of the material contained in the case record is now filed electronically, and for recent cases, may be available on the Web. But even for most pre-Internet cases, finding the proper repository for all these records is not difficult. A visit to your school?s reference librarian with copies of the articles referenced here should get you started.
Lombardo also suggests consulting newspapers and magazines, professional journals, and material generated by the parties and their lawyers. ?Though some students may complain of ?reading overload,? skillful editing can make the effort to contextualize the cases well worth everyone?s while. ?I also anticipate that internet archives of particular helpful case studies will accumulate over time.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) ? Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich stormed to an upset victory in the South Carolina primary Saturday night, dealing a sharp setback to former front-runner Mitt Romney and suddenly scrambling the race for the Republican presidential nomination.
"Thank you, South Carolina!" a jubilant Gingrich tweeted to his supporters. He appealed for a flood of donations for the next-up Jan. 31primary. "Help me deliver the knockout punch in Florida. Join our Moneybomb and donate now," said his tweet.
Exit polls showed he led among voters who said their top priority was picking a candidate who could beat President Barack Obama ? a group that had preferred Romney in earlier contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.
Romney, the national front-runner until now, was unbowed. He vowed to contest for every vote "in every state" and unleashed a double-barreled attack on Obama and Gingrich.
Referring to Gingrich's criticism of his business experience, Romney said, "When my opponents attack success and free enterprise, they're not only attacking me, they're attacking every person who dreams of a better future. He's attacking you," he told supporters, the closest he came to mentioning the primary winner's name.
Returns from 57 percent of the state's precincts showed Gingrich with 40 percent of the vote to 27 percent for Romney. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum was winning 18 percent, Texas Rep. Ron Paul 13 percent.
As the first Southern primary, South Carolina has been a proving ground for Republican presidential hopefuls in recent years. Since Ronald Reagan in 1980, every Republican contender who won the primary has gone on to capture the party's nomination.
Based on the vote total, Gingrich won at least 15 of the 25 Republican National Convention delegates at stake and none of the other contenders was yet assured of any.
But political momentum was the real prize with the race to pick an opponent to Obama still in its early stages.
Already, Romney and a group that supports him were on the air in Florida with a significant television ad campaign, more than $7 million combined to date.
Aides to the former Massachusetts governor had once dared hope that Florida would seal his nomination ? if South Carolina didn't first ? but that strategy appeared to vanish along with the once-formidable lead he held in pre-primary polls.
Romney swept into South Carolina 11 days ago as the favorite after being pronounced the winner of the lead-off Iowa caucuses, then cruising to victory in New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary.
But in the sometimes-surreal week that followed, he was stripped of his Iowa triumph ? GOP officials there now say Santorum narrowly won ? while former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman dropped out and endorsed Romney and Texas Gov. Rick Perry quit and backed Gingrich.
Romney responded awkwardly to questions about releasing his income tax returns, and about his investments in the Cayman Islands. Gingrich, the former speaker of the House, benefited from two well-received debate performances while grappling with allegations by an ex-wife that he had once asked her for an open marriage so he could keep his mistress.
By primary eve, Romney was speculating openly about a lengthy battle for the nomination rather than the quick knockout that had seemed within his grasp only days earlier.
Exit polling showed Gingrich, the former House speaker, leading by a wide margin among the state's heavy population of conservatives, tea party supporters and born-again Christians.
In a state with 9.9 percent unemployment, about 80 percent of all voters said they were very worried about the direction of the economy. Gingrich's edge over Romney among that group tracked the overall totals closely, the former speaker winning 41 percent and the runner-up 27.
The exit poll was conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks by Edison Research as voters left polls at 35 randomly selected sites. The survey involved interviews with 2,381 voters and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
Santorum vowed to continue, although his weak third place finish could well portend financial difficulty for a campaign that has never been flush with cash. It's a wide-open race. Join the fight" he urged supporters at a rally in Charleston.
Paul had his worst finish of the year, and isn't expected to make a strong effort in Florida. Even so, he said to supporters, "Keep fighting." He has said he intends to focus his efforts on caucus contests in Nevada on Feb. 4 and Missouri several days later.
Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, pinned his South Carolina hopes on a heavy turnout in parts of the state with large concentrations of social conservatives, the voters who carried him to his surprisingly strong showing in Iowa.
Paul had a modest campaign presence here after finishing third in Iowa and second in New Hampshire. His call to withdraw U.S. troops from around the world was a tough sell in a state dotted with military installations and home to many veterans.
Romney's stumbles began even before his New Hampshire primary victory, when he told one audience that he had worried earlier in his career about the possibility of being laid off.
He gave a somewhat rambling, noncommittal response in a debate in Myrtle Beach last Monday when asked if he would release his tax returns before the primary. The following day, he told reporters that because most of his earnings come from investments, he paid about 15 percent of his income in taxes, roughly half the rate paid by millions of middle-class wage-earners. A day later, aides confirmed that some of his millions are invested in the Cayman Islands, although they said he did not use the offshore accounts as a tax haven.
Asked again at a debate in North Charleston on Thursday about releasing his taxes, his answer was anything but succinct and the audience appeared to boo.
Gingrich benefited from a shift in strategy that recalled his approach when he briefly soared to the top of the polls in Iowa. At mid-week he began airing a television commercial that dropped all references to Romney and his other rivals, and contended that he was the only Republican who could defeat Obama.
It featured several seconds from the first debate in which the audience cheered as he accused Obama of having put more Americans on food stamps than any other president.
Nor did Gingrich flinch when ex-wife Marianne said in an interview on ABC that he had been unfaithful for years before their divorce in 1999, and asked him for an open marriage.
Asked about the accusation in the opening moments of the second debate of the week, he unleashed an attack on ABC and debate host CNN and accused the "liberal news media" of trying to help Obama by attacking Republicans. His ex-wife's account, he said, was untrue.

Jackson doc won't be asked to pay restitution (AP)
LOS ANGELES ? Prosecutors will not seek restitution against the doctor convicted of killing Michael Jackson after conferring with the singer's parents and attorneys for his estate and children.
The request for payments from Conrad Murray was withdrawn Wednesday during a brief court hearing, just days before a judge was scheduled to consider how much the former cardiologist should pay to members of Jackson's family or his estate.
Deputy District Attorney David Walgren told the judge handling the case that he was withdrawing the restitution request after speaking with Jackson's mother, Katherine, and attorney for his father, Joseph. Walgren also consulted with an attorney for the singer's estate and a court-appointed attorney representing the interests of Jackson's three children, a transcript of the proceedings shows.
Murray remains in jail after being convicted in November of involuntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to serve four years in jail, but his incarceration will be cut in half due to overcrowding and California's budget crunch.
Jackson's estate estimated the singer would have earned at least $100 million if he had performed his "This Is It" concerts planned for London's O2 arena. Murray might have also been found liable for Jackson's funeral expenses, which totaled more than $1.8 million. Murray's attorneys said he had nowhere near the money to pay either amount, and he filed paperwork last month indicating he is indigent.
Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor ruled that the family was waiving its right to restitution permanently, although two separate cases pending in a Los Angeles civil court seek damages for the King of Pop's June 2009 death. Katherine Jackson is suing concert giant AEG Live, which was promoting Jackson's planned series of comeback concerts, claiming they failed to properly supervise Murray.
Joseph Jackson is suing AEG Live, alleging negligence by the entertainment promoter in his son's death, and he is suing Murray for wrongful death in the case.
Murray's attorney, J. Michael Flanagan, said he was pleased to have the restitution issue resolved. Flanagan said during Wednesday's hearing that he intends to seek bail for Murray while he appeals his conviction, according to the transcript, but he was told to put the request in writing.
The fate of Joseph Jackson's civil case remains unclear. A California bar court in Los Angeles recommended Friday that the Jackson family patriarch's attorney, Brian Oxman, be barred from practicing law because of conduct on other, unrelated cases. Oxman filed Joseph Jackson's lawsuit in federal court on the one-year anniversary of the singer's death, but a judge later ruled it should be heard in state court. Oxman is the only attorney who has been listed on the case so far and has been a vocal antagonist against Murray and AEG Live.
Reached by phone, Oxman declined to comment on the recommendation, which still must be approved by the California Supreme Court.
The disciplinary court found that Oxman and his wife, who is also his law partner, mixed clients' and personal funds in an effort to evade creditors and sanctions imposed against Oxman. He had been disciplined previously, which the court cited among its reasons for seeking the revocation of his law license.

Britain urges tougher Syria sanctions (Reuters)
BEIRUT (Reuters) ? Britain called on Wednesday for harsher sanctions on Syria, where an Arab monitoring mission has failed to halt bloodshed in a 10-month-old revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.
Syria may let the monitors stay on after their mandate expires on Thursday, but Assad's foes say the Arab League peace effort has failed and the U.N. Security Council should step in.
Arab foreign ministers, due to consider their next step at the weekend, are split over how to handle Syria, as is the Security Council, which has failed to adopt any position.
U.S. President Barack Obama has again called for a change of government, saying the violence in Syria was unacceptable.
British Prime Minister David Cameron accused Iran and Lebanon's Shi'ite Hezbollah movement of helping to prop up Assad, whom he described as "a wretched tyrant."
"Britain needs to lead the way in making sure we tighten the sanctions, the travel bans, the asset freezes, on Syria," Cameron told parliament in London.
European Union foreign ministers are expected to discuss extra EU sanctions at a meeting on Monday.
Hundreds of killings on both sides have been reported since the Arab League sent observers last month to see whether Damascus was respecting a peace plan it accepted on November 2.
An Arab League source said Damascus would accept a one-month extension of the monitoring mission, but no broadening of its mandate. Critics say the observers have only provided Assad with diplomatic cover and more time to crush his opponents.
The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said security forces killed a civilian in a village in the northwestern province of Idlib on Wednesday and the body of a youth detained nearly two weeks ago turned up in Homs.
It said a soldier had been killed and five wounded in clashes between troops and army deserters in the Idlib village of Khaf Takharim. Three rebel soldiers were also wounded.
Syria's state news agency SANA said the strangled body of a veterinarian doctor was found in Homs bearing marks of torture four days after he was kidnapped by an "armed terrorist group."
The United Nations said on December 13 that Assad's security forces had killed more than 5,000 people since the unrest erupted in mid-March. Nine days later, the government said "armed terrorist groups" had killed 2,000 security personnel.
FEARS OF CIVIL WAR
Lebanese Druze leader Walid Jumblatt, who has distanced himself from Damascus in recent months, said the Arab monitors had failed to staunch the bloodletting and that Syrians wanted freedom, like other Arabs who have revolted in the past year.
"I am more and more concerned about the possibility that Syria will plunge into more violence and ... maybe civil war," he told Reuters in an interview.
The Arab plan required Syria to halt the bloodshed, withdraw troops from cities, free detainees, provide access for the monitors and the media and open talks with opposition forces.
A tenuous truce was holding on Wednesday in Zabadani, near the Lebanese border, where troops had been fighting anti-Assad rebels, residents said. But heavy machinegun fire and explosions rocked the troubled city of Homs, an opposition group said.
"As of now there is no shelling and no gunfire. It is quiet. But the army is still surrounding the area," said one Zabadani resident who gave her name as Rita.
Syrian forces backed by tanks attacked the hill resort on Friday in the biggest military offensive against insurgents since the Arab monitors began work on December 26.
Michel Kilo, a dissident Syrian writer who spent six years in jail, said the struggle in Syria was at an impasse.
"The regime can't stop people protesting and the people can't bring the regime down," he told France's Le Figaro daily, adding that Assad wanted to "bring in Iran, Hezbollah, Iraq and to threaten Gulf countries with a long war."
Riad al-Asaad, a leader of the rebel Free Syrian Army, told Reuters on Tuesday the Arab League's efforts had failed.
"We call on them to turn the issue over to the U.N. Security Council and we ask that the international community intervene because they are more capable of protecting Syrians at this stage than our Arab brothers," the former army colonel said.
The Arab League source said China and Russia, which have blocked Security Council action so far, had urged President Assad to accept an extension of the monitoring mission to avert an escalation at the international level.
Qatar has proposed sending in Arab troops, an idea rejected by Syria and one likely to be resisted by its Arab allies.

Santorum claims win in Iowa
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) ? Republican Rick Santorum is declaring himself the winner in Iowa, saying it shows he can defeat rival Mitt Romney. He's also vowing to stick with his bid for the GOP presidential nomination despite Thursday's decision by Texas Gov. Rick Perry to drop out of the race.
Republican officials say the final tally of votes from the Iowa caucuses show Santorum edging Romney by 34 votes. But they won't declare a winner because some votes still haven't come in. Romney had been declared the victor by eight votes.
The conservative Santorum also was endorsed Thursday by Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, an influential conservative Christian leader.

Napolitano: DHS Is Working with Mexico on ?Special Interest Aliens? Threat Along U.S.- Mexican Border

(CNSNews.com) ? Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on Tuesday said her agency is working with Mexican officials on the threat posed by individuals from countries with terrorist links or ?special interest aliens.?Napolitano?s remarks came during a panel discussion in Washington about the global role of DHS in fighting terrorist threats to the United States, including efforts to stop threats abroad before they arrive at U.S. airports or seaports.
CNSNews.com asked the secretary about the threat posed by individuals linked to terrorist groups in countries such as Somalia and Yemen who might enter the U.S. from Canada or Mexico and how the DHS is tracking that threat.
Napolitano said DHS is addressing that issue, ?recognizing that there are many things that could transit these huge land borders that we have.
?With respect to Mexico, we?ve been working very closely with them ? there?s a whole category called SIAs ? Special Interest Aliens is what it stands for,? Napolitano said, adding that DHS watches that category ?very carefully.?
Napolitano also said DHS is pursuing the Special Interest Aliens strategy in Central American countries.
Napolitano referred to an announcement the White House made in December 2011 about an agreement between Canada and the United States dubbed ?Beyond the Border? that explains the Obama administration?s goal to prioritize ?perimeter? security through cooperation between the two countries on a wide range of security and other issues.
Tuesday's discussion was held at the Woodrow Wilson Center in cooperation with The Aspen Institute Homeland Security Group. Other panelists included John McLaughlin, former deputy and acting director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and James Jones, former national security advisor.
In remarks leading up to the discussion, Napolitano emphasized the Obama administration's emphasis on identifying threats around the world, including having DHS personnel stationed in 75 countries -- making it the federal agency with the third largest presence abroad.
?It recognizes that in today?s world, domestic security and international security are inextricably intertwined,? Napolitano said. ?A security decision made in one part of the globe can rapidly impact security half a world away.
?And that means that we have to look at our physical borders as our last line of defense and not as our first,? Napolitano said.

CNSNEWS.COM: You?ve talked about air travel and efforts in that department and also of ports of entry, but I wondered if you can give us a sense of the threat at the border ? Canada and Mexico ? not just the regular illegal immigration that people talk about, but of people coming into this country from some of these areas we?ve talked about like Somalia and Yemen and other places where there?s a threat. Can you give us a sense of how DHS is tracking that?
NAPOLITANO: Yeah, actually, we?ve done quite a bit in that arena, recognizing that there are many things that could transit these huge land borders that we have. The president and Prime Minister Harper announced what?s called Beyond the Borders, which really creates for the first time a perimeter sense of security coming into North America. We?re trying to take some pressure off the airports and land ports along the northern border in that regard. And also enable up to follow travel patterns and the like better.
NAPOLITANO: With respect to Mexico, we?ve been working very closely with them ? there?s a whole category called SIAs ? Special Interest Aliens is what it stands for. But we watch that very carefully; work with the Mexicans on it. We have been working ? not just with Mexico, but countries of Central America, in terms of following more closely people transiting the airports and the like. And so, again, our efforts there are to try to get as much info and too take as much pressure off the physical land border as we can.

Weird gadgets at CES: Motorized unicycle, anyone?

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? A motorized, seat-less unicycle, a video game you control with your eyes, and a mind-reading headset that serves as a game controller were among the more bizarre gadgets being shown off at this year's International Consumer Electronics Show.
Some 3,100 exhibitors attended the show, and although there were plenty of mainstream technologies on display, the show attracted a fair share of off-beat gadgets. Here's a roundup of some of the weirdest devices:
? SOLOWHEEL. Picture a unicycle without a frame or saddle, and you have the Solowheel. Not working for you? Ok, add this to the picture: footboards that fold out from the wheel. To ride it, you stand on the footboards and straddle the wheel. Lean forward, and the wheel engages a battery-powered electric motor that can send it ?and hopefully its rider? zooming along at 10 miles per hour. The wheel has a gyroscope that helps keep the rider upright. In other words, it's like a Segway with only one wheel.
Because of the rechargeable battery, which has a 15- to 20-mile range, the Solowheel weighs 26 pounds. That's as much as a folding bike, but the Solowheel is more compact. It's sold by Inventist LLC for $1,800. Its creator is a serial inventor, Shane Chen, previously came up with the AquaSkipper, a human-powered hydrofoil.
Who's it for? Brave people with a good sense of balance, who want to utterly surprise everyone they meet.
? FOAM FIGHTERS. Toy companies are eager to link their products with smartphone and tablet games, creating toys that are an amusing blend of virtual and real. Foam Fighters are made of two sheets of thin foam, painted and shaped like World War II fighter planes such as the famous Mitsubishi Zero. Toss them in the air, and they fly like paper airplanes. Better yet, you can attach them to a plastic arm with a suction cup that, in turn, sticks to the back of an iPhone, iPad or Android phone, right next to the camera. The airplane shows up on screen, and if you download a free app, the fighter plane will look like it's zooming around in war-torn skies, controlled by the movement of the phone or tablet. Foam Fighters go on sale in April. A pack of two, with a stand, will cost $10.
Who's it for: AppGear is aiming at kids, ages 8 to 12, but it could appeal to frustrated fighter pilots of all ages.
? HAIER BRAIN WAVE. The Chinese appliance company brought this wireless mind-reading headset to the show, and demonstrated how it could be used to control a TV set. It holds one sensing pad to the wearer's forehead and another that clips onto an earlobe. The big limitation is that the mind-reading capability (actually just measurement of brain waves) is crude. The set can only be used to sense if the user wants something to go up or down. For any other direction, you need the remote. In a demonstration of a simple maze-like game, the wearer guided a figure up or down with his mind, and right and left with the remote. Haier said it's developing something that lets the wearer change channels by thinking about it.
Haier is selling the set in China, but has no plans to bring it to market in the U.S.
Who's it for: No one outside of China, yet. Eventually, this could be a dream come true for the laziest of couch potatoes.
? EYE ASTEROIDS ? Continuing on the theme of controlling electronics without moving, Swedish company Tobii brought its eye-controlled arcade game to the show. To play, you stand in front of it and look at a screen, where asteroids hurtle toward your battle station. It shoots laser beams at the asteroids you look at, destroying them. So yes, looks can kill.
The game cabinet contains cameras that track your gaze. The arcade game is really just a technology demonstration. What Tobii really wants is to have these gaze-tracking cameras built into laptops and other computers, so we can dispense with the mouse. But it does sell the game for $15,000.
Who's it for: Arcade owners who want the latest.
? SIGNA POWERTREKK ? This New York company showed off an alternative to batteries: a fuel cell the size of a big sandwich, powered by small, light "pucks" of a silicon-based material that produces hydrogen when water is added. The fuel cell is expensive, at $200, but the pucks are cheap, at $12 for three. Each puck will produce the equivalent of six AA batteries of electricity. That means it can charge an iPhone twice, through the included cables.
SiGNa will be selling the cell through outdoor retailer REI this spring.
Who's it for: Campers, hermits and others who need to go a long time without electricity.

"A silk charmeuse blanket retails for $450, and it's a favorite gift. Gwyneth Paltrow has given this as baby gifts and it's a favorite among celebrities." Now, Edmunds would not divulge if Beyoncé is a client, but rumors have been swirling that she and Jay-Z registered for her <a href="http://www.poshtots.com/interior-design-guide/nursery-necessities/all-baby-cribs/fantasy-carriage-crib/3378/3381/1313/12867/poshproductdetail.aspx" target="_blank">Fantasy Coach Carriage Crib</a>, which retails for $20,000. "I will tell you that we do have a coach carriage, and we have sold the coach carriage." Edmunds said. Higher Gas Prices Could Benefit the U.S. Over Time (ContributorNetwork)
COMMENTARY | High gas prices are not something typically associated with the general definition of "a good thing." Even as a Forbes report is anticipating oil remaining in the $98 a barrel range for all of 2012, seeing gas prices remain higher than normal could work in the advantage of the United States. Adding more fuel to the fire is the potential for Nigeria to cut off oil shipments to the U.S. amid a labor dispute according to the Associated Press. Of course, smaller supply equals higher prices for gas.
Those higher fuel prices translate into just about everything costing more money, including get back and forth to work. Higher gas prices mean higher shipping prices, which means outsourcing jobs, particularly manufacturing jobs, is not as valuable to companies. A report from Rock Center speculates that by 2015 overseas manufacturing will only save companies 10 percent. The report also mentions that companies will begin to shift operations back to the United States to save money, which could be a corporate slogan by that time.
So higher fuel prices could actually be a good thing for the U.S. economy, albeit in the long-term. In addition, foreign labor is not as cheap as it once was because the shift of manufacturing caused a hiring boom in markets like China, which is also in the Rock Center report.
So while consumers might lament the high cost of fuel, those higher prices could eventually drive businesses and jobs back to America. Sure the effects will not be felt for a few years, but just to see the "Made in the USA" label regularly again might make the pain associated with higher gas prices bearable.
Everything is purely speculation. However, when it comes to the bottom line, corporations will do whatever is required to keep margins high, or at least higher. And that could be reassuring news for everyone.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) ? A splintered conservative vote in South Carolina could pave the way for Mitt Romney to win this week's pivotal primary, some rivals said Sunday, acknowledging an outcome that prominent state lawmakers suggested could end the nomination fight.
"I think the only way that a Massachusetts moderate can get through South Carolina is if the vote is split," said Newt Gingrich, portraying himself as the lone conservative with a "realistic chance" of beating Romney in the first-in-the South contest.
Polls show Romney, the former Massachusetts governors who struggled to a fourth-place finish in South Carolina during his 2008 White House run, with a lead heading into Saturday's vote. The state has a large population of evangelicals and other conservative Christians, and concerns arose four years ago about his Mormon faith.
But Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Rick Perry all said Romney, after victories in Iowa and New Hampshire, continued to benefit from the fractured GOP field and the failure of social conservatives to fully coalesce around a single alternative.
"If for some reason he's not derailed here and Mitt Romney wins South Carolina ... I think it should be over," said the state's senior senator, Republican Lindsey Graham. He added, "I'd hope the party would rally around him if he did in fact win South Carolina."
Santorum said South Carolina is "not going to be the final issue" and spoke of the "need to get this eventually down to a conservative alternative" to Romney. "When we get it down to a two-person race, we have an excellent opportunity to win this race," said the former Pennsylvania senator who won the endorsement of an influential group of social conservatives and evangelical leaders Saturday in Texas.
Perry, the Texas governor, said it was "our intention" to compete in the next contest, Florida's primary Jan. 31, even if he finished last in South Carolina.
Gingrich said he would "reassess" his candidacy if he lost in South Carolina and acknowledged that a Romney victory would mean "an enormous advantage going forward."
The former House speaker appealed for the support of "every conservative who wants to have a conservative nominee."
"I hope every conservative will reach the conclusion that to vote for anybody but Gingrich is, in fact, to help Romney win the nomination," he said.
To Rep. Tim Scott, R-S.C., the equation is simple: "If Romney wins South Carolina, I think the game's over. This is the last stand for many candidates."
He noted that three candidates are pursuing the evangelical vote "very strongly and without any question that works to the Romney campaign's benefit. It's hard to find a single candidate that rallies all of the Christian voters in South Carolina and therefore that splintered approach will probably have a major impact" in the primary.
Romney took a rare day off from campaigning while his opponents focused on the South Carolina coast. They also attended church services and prayer breakfasts in a state with a large population of evangelicals and other conservative Christians.
At the Cathedral of Praise in North Charleston, Gingrich was cheered by church members as he criticized activist judges who he said had made "anti-American" rulings to keep God out of schools. Santorum spoke at the same church Saturday.
At a prayer breakfast in Myrtle Beach, Perry appealed to religious conservatives to back his candidacy.
"Who will see the job of president as that of faithful servant to the American people, and the God who created us?" Perry said. "I hope each of you will peer into your heart and look for that individual with the record and the values that represent your heart."
The candidates faced a packed week of campaign events and nationally televised debates Monday and Thursday. No Republican has won the party's presidential nomination without carrying South Carolina.
Santorum battled Romney to a virtual tie in Iowa before falling to fifth place in New Hampshire. Gingrich and Perry fared poorly in both states.
All three have the backing of well-financed independent groups known as super political action committee that can help keep their candidacies afloat.
Santorum refused to suggest anyone should drop out of the race as a way to consolidate conservative support behind an anti-Romney candidate. But he said Republicans would have a hard time beating President Barack Obama in November if Romney were the nominee. Santorum cited Romney's push for mandatory insurance coverage in Massachusetts.
Gingrich and Perry used television interviews to focus on Romney's former leadership of the Bain Capital venture firm. Both defended raising questions about Bain's business practices, saying Romney's tenure would come under relentless assault from Democrats in the general election.
Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman picked up the endorsement of The State, one of South Carolina's leading newspaper. Huntsman came in a weak third in New Hampshire after skipping Iowa, but the paper described him as a "realist" able to appeal to the centrist voters who will decide the general election.
Texas Rep. Ron Paul was returning to campaigning for the first time since Wednesday. He has spent several days at home in Texas after his second-place finish in the New Hampshire primary last week.
Gingrich, Graham and Scott appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press," while Santorum spoke on "Fox News Sunday" and Perry was interviewed on CNN's "State of the Union."

Christians, Muslims unite at Nigeria protest (AP)
LAGOS, Nigeria ? A human wave of more than 20,000 surrounded the Muslim faithful as they prayed toward Mecca Friday, as anti-government demonstrations over spiraling fuel prices and corruption showed unity among protesters despite growing sectarian tensions in Africa's most populous nation.
While violence sparked by religious and ethnic divisions left about 1,500 people dead last year alone in Nigeria, some hope the ongoing protests gripping the oil-rich nation will bring together a country that already suffered through a bloody civil war.
"It shows that Nigeria is now coming together as one family," said Abdullahi Idowu, 27, as he prepared to wash himself before Friday prayers.
Labor unions, meanwhile, announced Friday they would halt their five-day strike for the weekend, allowing families stuck largely inside their homes to go to markets and rest. Union leaders also plan to meet President Goodluck Jonathan and government officials on Saturday for new negotiations, just ahead of a promised labor shutdown of Nigeria's oil industry.
Nigeria, which produces about 2.4 million barrels of crude a day, is the fifth-largest oil exporter to the U.S. While the country has a several-week stock of oil ready for export, the threatened shutdown Sunday could shake oil futures as traders remained concerns about worldwide supply.
The strike began Monday, paralyzing the nation of more than 160 million people. The root cause remains gasoline prices: President Goodluck Jonathan's government abandoned subsidies that kept gasoline prices low Jan. 1, causing prices to spike from $1.70 per gallon (45 cents per liter) to at least $3.50 per gallon (94 cents per liter). The costs of food and transportation also largely doubled in a nation where most people live on less than $2 a day.
Anger over losing one of the few benefits average Nigerians see from being an oil-rich country, as well as disgust over government corruption, have led to demonstrations across this nation and violence that has killed at least 10 people. Red Cross volunteers have treated more than 600 people injured in protests since the strike began, the International Committee of the Red Cross said Friday.
"Over 4,000 persons have also been temporarily displaced there as a result of the strike and communal tensions," said Mamadou Sow, the deputy head of the committee's delegation in Nigeria. "Most of them have now started to return to their homes."
Protesters say they will not accept anything other than a full restoration of the estimated $8 billion in subsidies the government spends to keep gas prices low. On Friday, the president of the Nigeria Labor Congress said the government offered a slight subsidy to lower prices during negotiations on Thursday night. However, Abdulwaheed Omar said labor organizers rejected it, saying they wanted a full return of the subsidy.
At the mass demonstration in Lagos, Pastor Tunde Bakare called in Nigeria to reject a government that "is working hard to remove the crumbs the poor people survive on," while not providing adequate clean drinking water and electricity.
"We have become a generator republic," said Bakare, a one-time vice presidential candidate for the opposition party Congress for Progressive Change.
Bakare also urged those gathered in Nigeria's predominantly Christian south not to retaliate against Muslims living in their neighborhoods over recent attacks by a radical Islamist group known as Boko Haram. The group, which wants to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria, is blamed for killing at least 67 people so far this year alone, according to an Associated Press count.
Boko Haram also has begun specifically targeting Christians in Nigeria's Muslim north in their attacks, causing some to flee while exploiting deep-seated ethnic suspicions in the country. Jonathan himself described the situation as worse than the nation's 1960s civil war, which saw 1 million people killed after Nigeria's southeast declared itself the Republic of Biafra.
"In every family in the south, there are Muslims and Christians. They are not violent people. The sect can be identified and dealt with," Bakare told the AP.
In a show of solidarity, the protests Friday included prayers for Muslims. Several thousand gathered in the grass near an expressway off-ramp. Sheik Abdulrahman Ahmad preached to the crowd about the evils of terrorism, calling on them to shun possible reprisal attacks over the ongoing unrest.
"Because we forget ourselves, oil has become our curse," Ahmad told the crowd. He later added: "Our problem is oppression; our problem is bad governance."
Though Christians gathered around praying Muslims to protect them during their prayers, violence still lurks around the edges of the protest in a country where people are beginning to become hungry. A crowd suddenly ran after a suspected thief at one point, stoning him and beating him with sticks until he fell into a trash and feces-filled ditch.
The crowd continued to throw things at him, cursing.
"This is the life of a Nigerian," a man in the crowd called out. "This is how we live."

Gene Hackman Hit By Car, Airlifted to Hospital
Oscar winner Gene Hackman airlifted to the hospital Friday afternoon after he was hit by a car while riding his bike in the Florida Keys, his rep said.
Fortunately, the 81-year-old is alright and and on the mend.
"Gene was airlifted (because he is on an island) to the hospital for routine tests," the rep confirmed. "Everything is fine and Gene is on his way home now."
The actor suffered only "a few bumps and bruises."
TMZ, which first reported the accident, said that the collision occurred at around 3 p.m. EST Friday, and the Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
Gene was assigned a special hospital room for high-profile patients where doctors could keep a close eye on the star, who suffered a cut on his forehead.
Hackman won the Academy Award for Best Actor for 1971's The French Connection and another Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1992's Unforgiven.

PayPal's Scott Thompson becomes CEO of Yahoo; signing bonus probably stuck in a frozen account
Think you're having a good day? Try being Tim Morse, who was just relieved of the seemingly impossible task known as "being the Chief Executive Officer of Yahoo." After years of turmoil and bouts of bickering with Alibaba, Yahoo has just appointed Scott Thompson as its new CEO -- marking the introduction of a new year with the introduction of a new head honcho. Mr. Morse, who was standing in as interim CEO, will resume his role as Chief Financial Officer, and Thompson will become a member of the company's Board of Directors starting January 9th. Scott served most recently as President of PayPal, where -- so far as we can tell -- he did nothing to remove the draconian 'dispute' process that has jaded so many souls belonging to slighted eBayers. Bitterness aside, his primary focus in his new role will be to "continue the strategic review process to identify the best approaches for the company and its shareholders," and the release makes clear that Yahoo is "considering a wide range of opportunities for the company's business, as well as specific investments or dispositions of assets."
