8 things to do if you haven't planned for retirement

Bill Haber / AP file

Retirees of the future will find their experience much different from their parents' golden years.

By Samuel Weigley, 24/7 Wall St.

??Once people reach their 50s they finally see retirement on the horizon. They start envisioning that time when they can stop going to work and instead spend their days on the golf course, on the beach or with their families. Yet many people have not saved nearly enough for retirement by the time they are 50 years old. A recent survey by the Employee Benefit Research Institute found that 60 percent of workers born between 1946 and 1964 have less than $100,000 for retirement. In fact, 40 percent have saved less than $25,000.

24/7 Wall St. interviewed retirement-related experts from brokerage firms, banks, retirement advocacy groups, and independent financial advisers. With their help, 24/7 identified the eight actions you should take if you have not prepared to retire.

Financial advisers generally recommend people begin saving for retirement starting in their 20s to take full advantage of compounding interest. Although the financial advisers who spoke to 24/7 Wall St. say it is very hard to give concrete estimates on how much should be allocated toward equities and fixed-income, they say it is best to cut risk as one approaches their target retirement age.

24/7 Wall St.: America's richest school districts

Not saving up enough for retirement used to be less of a problem. Workers in previous generations often received pensions from their employers, allowing retirees to know exactly how much money they would get once retired. But employers have increasingly shifted that responsibility onto the employees through 401k and other defined contribution plans.

These days, notes Joe Ready, executive vice president for retirement at Wells Fargo, people get married and have children later in life than previous generations. This means that it is increasingly hard to save for retirement during the 40s and 50s because they still face heavy financial obligations -- they are still paying off their mortgage, sending their children to college and so on.

The fact that many current retirees are living off pensions has conditioned younger generations to think their retirement might be the same, says Lule Demmissie, managing director of retirement for TD Ameritrade. ?Face it,? Demmissie says, ?your retirement isn?t your parents? retirement.?

Demmissie notes that people in retirement today are working until a later age and finding cheaper housing as they no longer can count on that pension that was once provided to employees. She also points out that while many people have never saved enough for retirement, the problem has become worse once the financial crisis took hold.

24/7 Wall St.: 13 ways to sell your home this year

By the time you reach age 50, you should have roughly four times your annual income built up in retirement, according to Jean Setzfand, vice president for financial security for AARP. The best way to reach that goal is to start socking away money starting in your 20s. Still, if you are well behind on your goals by the time you reach your 50s, all hope is not lost.

These are the eight things to do if you have not planned for retirement.

1. Reassess life priorities
Part of reassessing priorities is ensuring you have a plan in place. People should have a retirement plan when they are significantly younger than 50, yet EBRI finds that only 42 percent of workers of all ages have a retirement plan.

If, at the age of 50, people find themselves inadequately prepared for their dream retirement, they should start by looking at the future, advises Setzfand. ?The first thing people should do is consider, ?What do I want to do with the rest of my life??? The answer to that question will help decide what actions need to be taken, Setzfand explains. Before moving forward, it is important to ask such questions as ?Do I really need that second house in Florida?? or ?Can I (afford to) start a trust fund for my grandkids??

People need to consider how much they are willing and able to fund their children's college education. Setzfand notes that many parents in their 50s will foot most or all of their children?s college bill to make sure their children don?t end up with debt early in life. However, she cautions people to be careful to make sure they have enough money to build and sustain their own retirement nest egg. After all, you can?t borrow to fund your golden years.

2. Take advantage of increased contribution limits
If you are late saving for retirement, you may need an extra boost to get closer to your goals. Once people reach age 50, the amount of money they can contribute annually to their 401k and their IRA increases from $17,000 to $22,500 and from $5,000 to $6,000, respectively.?Employees should take advantage of these higher contribution limits if possible, since contributions to these plans are tax deductible.

Plus, many employers match contributions up to a certain amount, meaning that employees are forgoing free money if they do not contribute the maximum contribution amount. ?If you have access to a 401k, jump into it with two feet,? Ready says.

3. Downsize
Advisers also recommend downsizing. While the level of downsizing for some could mean simply cutting down on small expenses such as eating out and shopping, for others, more drastic measures may be necessary.

?Downsizing often isn?t something that can be done on the peripheral,? Demmissie says. For some, it may even mean downsizing the house, especially if there is a lot of equity on the property.

Those eyeing retirement can even plan to move in with their adult children. Demmissie notes there has been an increase in multiple generations living under one roof. While living with children is not necessarily part of most people?s dream retirement, it can help make sure retirees do not outlive their money by cutting out housing costs and even some home-care costs. Moving to places with lower tax rates and costs of living, Demmissie notes, may also help people live their more ideal retirement at a lower cost.

4. Keep working
With people living longer than generations past, the traditional retirement age of 65 is generally increasing and will continue to do so. About 40 percent of current American employees plan to continue working until at least age 70, according to a 2011 study by the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies.

Working until a later age, whether full-time or part-time, gives people more time to build their nest egg while also reducing the likelihood that they will run out of money during their golden years. Plus, if someone truly enjoys his or her job, continuing to work in some capacity is not necessarily a bad thing. ?I always believed retirement was fictional,? says John Sestina, founder of John E. Sestina and Company in Columbus, Ohio. ?Why does someone have to quit working if they are productive, and what are they going to do to replace that in their life? You can only play so many rounds of golf.?

People still need to take into consideration that their employment status could change due to circumstances such as a layoff or deteriorating health, says George Middleton, an adviser with Limoges Investment Management in Portland, Ore. ?A lot of my clients say they will just keep working,? he says. ?I always tell them ?but what if you can?t???

24/7 Wall St.: States with the safest hospitals

5. Factor in health care costs
Another burden facing retirees in the relatively near future is rapidly growing health care costs. A 65-year old couple who retires in 2012 should plan for $240,000 for medical costs, according to a study by Fidelity, provided the couple does not receive employer-sponsored health coverage. This figure, on average, has risen 6 percent annually since 2002.

Diane Pearson, a financial adviser at Legend Financial Advisors in Pittsburgh, says higher health care costs in recent years have changed the way she has counseled clients on retirement. She used to try to get her clients? nest eggs to accrue 2 percent more than inflation each year, but now that number is close to 6 percent due to rising health costs.

?People generally underestimate the amount of money they?ll need in retirement,? Pearson says, noting that health care predictions play a major role in that underestimation. ?The rule of thumb has been spending 75 percent to 85 percent in retirement of what you were spending while you were working full-time. I think that?s absolutely false.? Pearson says the amount spent in retirement likely will be about the same spent in your working years.

6. Don?t play catch up
If someone has failed to save enough for retirement by their 50s, it may be tempting to build a portfolio full of stocks to play catch-up. The financial experts interviewed by 24/7 Wall St. generally advise against this move. While some stocks are still important in a portfolio to help manage inflation, a bad stretch in the stock market can completely devastate a person?s financial goals. ?That?s financial suicide,? Sestina calls such a move. ?They can?t afford the risk with so little time.?

Middleton says he counsels his clients to take on as little risk as possible in order to reach their retirement goals. Someone who has not saved anything for retirement by age 50 would need to take more, but not excessively more, risk than someone who saved since they were in their 20s. ?I just warn (clients) that the plan might not work,? Middleton says.

7. Beware of financial scams
When people have not saved enough for retirement, they feel overwhelmed and are willing to take drastic measures to try to reach their retirement goals, including falling for financial scams such as the ?get rich quick? and ?work from home? schemes. Those ages 60 and older lost at least $2.9 billion due to these scams in 2010, according to a recent joint study from Metlife Mature Market Institute, the National Committee for Prevention of Elder Abuse and Virginia Tech University.

Setzfand says that when people are approached about financial products, they need to do research to make sure the product really can help achieve their financial goals. She also recommends people do some research on the broker trying to sell the product to make sure no sanctions have been levied on the broker. ?If something looks too good to be true, it?s too good to be true,? Setzfand says.

8. Do not skimp on insurance
While socking a higher portion of your income in your 50s may help build up a dream retirement fund, it is important to keep up with insurance payments in order to prepare for the unexpected. Such plans as life insurance and long-term care insurance can ensure a person?s spouse or children aren?t financially devastated in case of unfortunate events.

Since life insurance is relatively affordable, Middleton says he has not noticed many people going without it. However, he is concerned many are forgoing long-term care insurance due to its high cost. Middleton says not having long-term care insurance can ?completely destroy an estate? if a spouse happens to need that level of care in the future.

Obama?s counterfeit concept: US president?s fake-work make-work jobs scheme a real bust for taxpayers

"A shocking new study by the U.S. government's National Renewable Energy Laboratory shows the Obama administration's $9-billion solar power program created just 910 long-term jobs.

That's $9.8 million per job created.

Even if you add in all possible "indirect" jobs that could be attributed to this subsidy flurry, it still works out to $1.63 million in subsidies per job created, according to the report.?Just to be clear, this isn't some taxpayers federation or Republican Party group writing this scathing review. This is the US government itself.

That $9 billion was taxpayers' money - wrung out of the hides of Americans with real jobs. Or, to be more accurate, it was borrowed by Obama, from the Chinese government, and will hang around the neck of taxpaying Americans like an unpaid $9-billion credit card debt.

How many jobs will that kill?"

Twenty dead in Taliban siege of Afghan hotel; NATO blames Haqqanis

KABUL (Reuters) - Elite Afghan police backed by NATO forces ended a 12-hour siege on Friday at a popular hotel outside Kabul, leaving at least 20 dead after Taliban gunmen stormed the lakeside building, bursting into a party and seizing dozens of hostages.

The night-time assault on the hotel with rocket-propelled grenades, suicide vests and machine guns again proved how potent the Islamist insurgency remains after a decade of war.

Terrified guests jumped into the lake in the darkness to escape the carnage, Afghan officials and residents said. Up to 300 people had been inside the hotel when the attack began.

Afghan interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said 12 to 15 civilians, two hotel guards and a policeman were killed in the gunbattle at the Spozhmai hotel, overlooking Qargha Lake. Five attackers were also killed.

The attack, quickly claimed by the Afghan Taliban, again showed the ability of insurgents to stage high-profile raids even as NATO nations prepare to withdraw most of their combat troops by the end of 2014 and leave Afghans to lead the fight.

Blood was splattered over the hotel floor and the crumpled body of a man lay in the garden. Women and children were among the wounded.

"We heard a heavy explosion from a rocket-propelled grenade. We tried to escape, but we were surrounded by suicide bombers. We hid ourselves behind a tree until morning. God protected us," said Abdullah Samadi, 24.

The gunmen, Samadi said, had been closely watching their prisoners and searching for illegal stocks of wine.

"Around dawn they came closer to us and we had to jump in the water. We were there until 9 a.m. and then the situation got better and we slowly, slowly swam toward security forces," he said.

Sediqqi said the Taliban were using civilians as human shields to defend themselves and held about 50 people hostage late into Friday morning.

Elite Afghan quick-response police backed by NATO troops freed at least 35 hostages in an operation that only began in earnest after sunrise to help security forces avoid civilian deaths in night-time confusion.

The Taliban complained wealthy Afghans and foreigners used the hotel, about 10 km (6 miles) from the center of Kabul, for "prostitution" and "wild parties" ahead of the Friday religious day holiday.

Launching their annual offensive this spring, the Taliban threatened to attack more government officials and rich Afghans, but the hotel assault was one of few in which multiple hostages were taken since the start of the war, now in its 11th year.

President Hamid Karzai said attacking a place where people went for picnics was a sign of defeat for the enemies of Afghanistan.

"This is a crime against humanity because they targeted children, women and civilians picnicking at the lake. There wasn't even a single soldier around there," said General Mohammad Zahir, head of the Kabul police investigation unit.

Television pictures showed several people wading out of the lake onto a balcony and clambering over a wall to safety.

NATO attack helicopters could be seen over the single-storey hotel building and a balcony popular with guests for its sunset views, while a pall of smoke rose into the air.

NEW FACE OF INSURGENCY?

Soldiers and police fanned out around the hotel at dawn, arriving in cars and armored Humvee vehicles and taking cover behind trees flanking the lake and a nearby golf course.

Qargha Lake is one of Kabul's few options for weekend getaways. Restaurants and hotels that dot the shore are popular with Afghan government officials and businessmen, particularly on Thursday nights.

Guests at the Spozhmai must pass through security checks before entering the hotel, where tables with umbrellas overlook the water, but security is relatively light for a city vulnerable to militant attacks.

Violence across Afghanistan has surged in recent days, with three U.S. soldiers and more than a dozen civilians killed in successive attacks, mostly in the country's east, where NATO-led forces have focused their efforts during the summer fighting months.

NATO commanders, halfway into the process of transferring security responsibility to Afghan forces, are racing through training for the Afghan army and police, including holding basic literacy classes for recruits.

Well-planned assaults in Kabul in the past year have raised questions about whether the Taliban and their al Qaeda-linked Haqqani network allies have shifted tactics to embrace attacks on landmarks, foreigners and Afghanistan's elite, extending a guerrilla war once primarily waged in the countryside.

Afghan insurgents attacked Kabul's heavily protected diplomatic and government district on April 15 in an assault eventually quelled by Afghan special forces guided by Western mentors, similar to one in September 2011.

Militants also killed eight people in an attack on the upscale Intercontinental hotel in Kabul in June 2011.

Rio+20 Business Focus: Including cities and local governments in ...

22 June 2012

Politicians make the policy. But it?s often left to business to implement it. For this reason RTCC is featuring submissions from business across the globe in the lead up to Rio+20.

The aim is to demonstrate how Sustainable Development is becoming a reality on every continent, country and city.

Here Anke Stoffregen, from ICLEI ? Local Governments for Sustainability explains how cities and local governments will be key players in a world increasingly marked by urbanisation and the need to harenss their power and engage them in policy making.

In global policy we often look towards international organizations and national governments to take the lead.

However, with climate negotiations stalling, new leadership patterns to further global policy are emerging.

Civil society and increasingly the business sector are evolving to drivers of change. It is, however, cities that have made a real mark in the preparations for Rio+20.

Cities will have a huge role to play in an increasingly urbanised world (? Wuestenigel/Creative Commons)

We are facing a global challenge which needs to be tackled on a global scale.

The solutions, however, need to take into account regional and local circumstances and engage local communities in the implementation to be most effective and efficient.

The first decade of the 21st century is marked by the fact that the world?s urban population has exceeded the rural population for the first time in the history of human civilization.

By 2050 more than two thirds of the world?s population will live in cities. As the trend towards urbanization continues, increasing attention is being paid to the local level.

Due to the geographical concentration of people, infrastructure, investment, capital, knowledge and technology cities are able to do more with less.

Densely populated urban areas provide unique opportunities, they are economies of scale and can be highly efficient.

Urban centers are attractive because of the opportunities they offer and they are growing every day. Over the next 40 years four billion people will need urban housing as another three billion people join urban ranks.

The two thirds of humanity that will live in cities by 2050 will need to be cared for. They need jobs, food, housing, transport, sanitation and social services.

A huge challenge for public policy and decision makers at all levels.

Harnessing the strength of local governments

Local governments are implementing decisions impacting on sustainable development locally every day, and they will continue to implement solutions even without a much needed global framework that involves and appropriately supports them.

If energy prices spike in a city, if a city is shaken by social uprising on housing conditions, or if a flood hits a town, the mayor may not be able to wait until Rio+20 has sorted out how to engage local governments in the decision making process.

The local reality can be very different to the global reality.

Manila skyline

By 2050 two thirds of the global population are expected to live in cities (? Ibarra_sdv/Creative Commons)

To fully harness the power of local action, cities do require a more inclusive and enabling policy framework.

Local governments are the level of government closest to the people and local issues, and they are the implementing agents of local action.

They have the authority to affect infrastructure, building and local development decisions in order to meet global goals. Only if they are appropriately involved in the decision making process can their actions be most effective.

A bottom up process that truly allows for the needs of cities and local governments to be reflected in the global policy-making and governance framework, will provide a solid basis to deliver effective local actions that contribute to solving a global challenge.

The global community should not miss the opportunity of building upon the power, potential and ambitions of local action.

When local governments are being recognized as governmental stakeholders, engaged in global governance, and also empowered and supported as key actors, cities and urban areas can accelerate their performance.

They will become highly effective catalysts in the battle for sustainable development and the future we want.

Editorial: Windows Phone 8 looks good, but can it uproot those entrenched in other ecosystems?

Editorial Windows Phone 8 looks good, but can it uproot those entrenched in other ecosystems

At the tail end of Microsoft's marathon Windows Phone Summit keynote, the company's own Kevin Gallo said the following: "Everyone in the Windows ecosystem benefits." He was waxing poetic about the myriad new features coming to the outfit's latest and greatest mobile operating system, and nothing about his quote was incorrect. Developers will adore the shared codebase. Users will adore the new additions to the software framework. Carriers probably won't shun the opportunity to push yet another platform this holiday season. But the one word in there that sticks out most to me is this: "Windows."

I've been wrestling with the ecosystem issue for some time, but the gravity of it has never been so evident. Starting in 2008, one could argue that it stopped being purely about hardware. Purely about design. Purely about software. Purely about partnerships. Particularly when it came to smartphones. Slate-style handsets were en vogue years ago, with design changing extremely little and software becoming ever more of a factor. But it wasn't just software in the simplest sense -- it was how the software was interconnected to every other piece of the digital ecosystem. Phones were no longer standalone devices; they were simply the most convenient entry into a rabbit hole that Microsoft's going to have a tough time digging people out of. Allow me to explain.

(AP) ? President Fernando Lugo's trial was to begin Friday in Paraguay's Senate after lawmakers voted to impeach the former Roman Catholic bishop for his role in a deadly clash involving landless farmers.

Lugo, who was elected four years ago on promises that he would help the South American country's poor, went on national television to dismiss rumors that he would resign and vowed to face the trial "with all its consequences."

The lower house voted 76-1 on Thursday to impeach the president. Hours later the Senate announced that it will begin his trial on Friday.

In poor, landlocked Paraguay the vote prompted frightened residents in the capital, Asuncion, to shutter businesses and pull children out of schools. Hospitals were put on red alert, freeing up beds in case of possible violence and injuries.

Paraguayans were unnerved by the possibility that the looming showdown in the opposition-controlled Senate could spark violent street protests such as those that followed the March 1999 assassination of Vice President Luis Maria Argana.

"We are not going to escape turbulence, it's coming," said Paraguayan political analyst Horacio Galeano Perrone, who specializes in national defense issues. "If you were to ask me, I'd tell you to go to the supermarket and buy batteries, buy everything."

Lugo's election in 2008 ended 61 years of rule by the Colorado Party, and he has constantly clashed with Congress, where he has few firm allies.

Socialist Carlos Filizzola, who until recently was Lugo's interior minister, called the impeachment vote by lawmakers an "institutional coup" and said he thought the president's fate had already been decided.

"The political trial is a formality," he said.

If ousted, Lugo would be replaced by Vice President Federico Franco. Franco, of the Authentic Radical Liberal Party, "is ready to assume command and pacify the country," said Liberal lawmaker Enrique Sallim Buzarquis.

It would be a sharp fall for the once-popular leader who stepped down as the Catholic "bishop of the poor" to run for the presidency amid a leftward swing in South America. Once in office, he was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer and was hounded by paternity scandals.

But the fall in Lugo's popularity arises partly from his failure to enact agrarian reform in a country where tens of thousands of people are demanding land, said Galeano Perrone, the analyst. This failure led to a loss of support from some peasant groups.

"The true problem is the lack of agrarian reform," he said. "We are facing a social explosion and a rural explosion."

Paraguay's land ownership problems stretch back nearly 140 years to a war Paraguay lost to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. Saddled with crushing war debt, Paraguay began selling off government holdings that amounted to 95 percent of the country, with the most fertile parcels going to political cronies.

Privatizations accelerated under the 1954-1989 dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner and into the early 1990s, when about 17 million acres (7 million hectares) ended up in the hands of just 1,877 people, according to a 2004 government study.

Paraguay is now the world's No. 4 supplier of soybeans and land disputes have risen as farmers seek more land to grow the crop.

"Lugo isn't fulfilling his main election promise of carrying out agrarian reform but it is not his fault. The fault lies with a judicial system that blocks all attempts to expropriate land in the hands of foreigners or to recover formerly state land that was given to supporters of the dictatorship of Gen. Alfredo Stroessner," said Belarmino Balbuena, leader of the Paraguayan Campesino Movement.

Another reason for possible discontent was Lugo's request that the Senate archive a proposal to grant $50 million in funding for authorities to hire 10,000 registrars to inscribe new voters among other things. Some opponents accused the government of wanting to leave election authorities without funding and then order the postponement of elections so he could stay in power. Government officials have said the $50 million could be better spent elsewhere.

Lugo was elected with about 41 percent of the vote, but lacking legislative majorities his party was forced to strike deals with opponents to govern. As his popularity fell and the latest scandal erupted, his political allies deserted him, especially the vice president's Liberal party.

This cleared the way for the impeachment.

The trigger for the current impeachment was an attempt by police to evict about 150 farmers from a remote, 4,900-acre (2,000-hectare) reserve, which is part of a huge estate owned by a Colorado Party politician. Advocates for the farmers say the landowner used political influence to get the land from the state decades ago, and say it should have been put to use for land reform.

Seventeen people died in the clash and many people blamed Lugo.

Lugo, 61, has expressed sorrow at the confrontation and accepted the resignations of his interior minister and his chief of police.

On the streets of the Paraguayan capital, opinions about the impeachment effort were mixed.

"Lugo should finish his mandate," said Benito Canete, a 68-year-old concierge in an apartment building. "I think that if they get rid of him now it will be bad for the country."

Ana Campuzano, a 42-year-old odontologist, backed the ouster effort.

"Lugo should resign, it was bad for him to remain" after the deadly clash, she said. "It's his fault because he doesn't know how to manage things."

Lugo received the support late Thursday of the Union of South American Nations, Unasur, which sent a delegation to Paraguay.

The Gay Parents Study

The six cases in your sample where the mom and her lesbian partner stayed together with the child for 10 years or more weren?t enough, statistically, to compare to intact biological families. If I understand you correctly, you considered lowering the standard to couples who stayed together for five years. But that would get you only 18 cases, so you had to look at lowering the standard further. If you included cases where the mom and her partner stayed together ?for at least a good share of a year or more,? that would get you 81 cases. But by that point, we?re talking about 81 cases which, on aggregate, scored poorly on child outcomes compared to intact biological (IBF) families. As you point out, these 81 cases didn?t score much better than the overall LM sample, which included all the moms who had lesbian relationships, regardless of whether they spent any time raising the child with a female partner. So you reported outcomes for the whole LM sample.

Hunter's Haven: 8 Websites To Find DIY & Home Repair Tips

?

Sent to you by Chris Hunter via Google Reader:

home repairThere's a reason we call it a 'home' rather than a house isn't it. It's personal and it's us. As a recent owner of a new house I can appreciate the sleepless days and nights that goes into erecting one from the ground up. Then, as your new home starts to grow on you, you develop an obsession to keep everything perfect?every nail, every fleck of paint in its right place.

But things go wrong, and with time the plumbing starts to leak or the plaster shows a crack. There are handymen around for home repair of course, but just sometimes a work of love needs a DIY approach. It saves a packet of money too.

So, here are eight websites for DIY and home repair tips. Use them. Believe me, you will never be over-billed.

home repair

Start your search for good home improvement tips from this site. Originally started by two guys who knew a red wire from the yellow one, the DIY home improvement site has grown into quite a resource on wiring, building, plumbing and many other home how-to related topics. If you can't find a bit of information on the main site, hit the Self Help forums which is well-populated with nearly 12,000 threads.

If you are serious about taking the DIY way with your home improvement projects, Ask The Builder could be a subscription you should look at. It is a free newsletter that offers building information you can trust from award-winning builder and nationally syndicated columnist Tim Carter each week. You can come to the site and Ask Tim also, and read up on some Before & After pictures for inspiration from other DIY-ers around the country. The site also has tool reviews, discounts, giveaways, and other information. Meet Tim on the site's About page.

home repairs yourself

Hometime is on TV and has been for 24 years dispensing advice on the basics of repairing everything related to a house. If you didn't catch the show, you can come to this website. The how-to videos and articles are easy to follow, even for the guy who doesn't know one end of the wrench from the other. Search the site for the right how-to video or article on home repair; some tasks have more than one video associated with them.

home repairs yourself

The home improvement and repair website covers the indoors as well as the outdoors with sections on gardening and landscaping. There's a neat section on crafts and hobbies to go along with it which should help you spruce up your pad. The site seems to be broadening its DIY focus with articles on car repair, event planning, and personal finance too. The community is pretty vibrant too on the forum. Follow the experts who seem to be professional contractors as they take you through instructions and videos on the site.

home repairs yourself

eHow has always been at the front when it comes to DIY videos and instructions. eHow Home covers your home tasks with 571 videos which take you through d?cor, design, gardening, and landscaping video tutorials. You also get to watch the Garden Home Challenge where designer and lifestyle expert P. Allen Smith and his colleagues build an environmentally friendly home for $150,000 in 150 days. His offered tips are just as applicable to your smaller house as it is to the show's.

diy home improvement

This one is for the U.K., but I guess Americans can follow his advice too. One of the top video instruction channels when it comes to house maintenance and DIY jobs around the house, the Ultimate Handyman takes you through it all step-by-step, in the end saving you quite a few pounds. The channel has playlists on how to use tools properly, metal working, acrylic jobs, and computer repair among the usual home repair stuff. The Ultimate Handyman site is even more comprehensive with nearly 50000 pages of DIY instructions.

diy home improvement

Home Addition Plus is a lesser known DIY-er site, but it has got a good enough collection of how-to videos on its YouTube channel. The site and the channel are for you if you are planning an extension around the house. Home addition tips and DIY home improvement advice forms the basis of the channel. Even if you don't do it yourself, you will get enough know-how to tackle the contractors with your list of wants.

home repair

Build.com is one of the neatest and well-designed home improvement YouTube channels out there. They are innovative with their tips and lay special emphasis on use of recycled materials. For instance, how to make a Tiki torch from recycled bottles. But my favorite playlist would be the 30-Sec. Tips with tips like how to make your own self-watering pot.

There are enough DIY home repair websites out there to last a lifetime. I have barely scratched that polished surface. You can check out nice sites like The Family Handyman and HGTV and suggest your own too. Also, takeaway some tips from our previously published pieces on home d?cor:

Are you a DIY-er when it comes to home repair with things like sanding, polishing, cutting, and plumbing? Or would you rather dial a contractor's number? If you are the former, tell us about your beginnings and tips for making it as a DIY handyman around the house.

New Decatur, Alabama Solar Installation Supports U.S. Energy Independence

?

?

DECATUR, Ala., June 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?The 200 kW capacity project, largest such commercial installation in Alabama to date, provides clean, renewable electricity to the Tennessee Valley Authority power grid.? This installation is part of an upgrade to Dakin America's facility in Decatur.? It includes capacity expansion of several fluorochemical product lines as well as generation of solar energy using Daikin products.? Lightweight, transparent ETFE films used on top of flexible or rigid solar modules have higher light transmittance than glass while providing long-term weather protection.? Daikin's ZEFFLE? fluorocoatings excel at providing similar protection for the backs of rigid solar modules.? These photovoltaic topsheets and backsheets play a critical role in the performance of solar panels over their lifetime.

Three days of celebration in May included a ribbon cutting for Daikin's expanded chemical plant as well as start up of the solar energy installation and Daikin's annual festival welcoming the local community. ?Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, participated in the event along with other dignitaries.

Major Players

The Decatur solar, or photovoltaic, project was made possible through incentives from the U.S. "1603 Treasury" program, which paid for 30% of the project, and the Tennessee Valley Authority's "Generation Partner" program.? Daikin's solar energy project has the annual capacity of producing more than 250,000 kWh of clean electricity, the equivalent of saving up to 20,000 gallons of gasoline and reducing CO2 emission by 200 metric tons, every year.

An American Enterprise

Daikin America's main partners in this venture are all Tennessee Valley business entities.? Suniva, Inc. headquartered in Norcross, Georgia, supplied the majority of the PV modules.? These high power-density Optimus modules incorporate high performing fluoro-coated PV backsheets using Daikin products as part of a combination of materials.? System integration was provided by First Century Energy Holdings, Inc., also of Georgia.? TVA, the energy supplier to the area and its distributor, Decatur Utilities, will buy the electricity generated by the solar installation at a premium.? "Renewable energy is an important component of TVA's plan for a broader, more balanced energy generation mix for clean, low cost, energy in the future" said Patty West, TVA's Director of Renewable Energy Programs.?? The result: green energy, growing businesses and more jobs for the region.

Many Applications

Daikin's ZEFFLE? fluorocoatings and ETFE films are used in a variety of crystalline-silicon and thin-film PV modules in both rigid and flexible configurations. ?Topsheets and backsheets made with these high-performance fluoropolymers are used by PV modules manufacturers in the U.S., China, Europe, Japan and India.

Looking to Tomorrow

Daikin is the world's leading producer of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, a pioneer in cooling efficiency.? In the U.S., Daikin America is one of the largest producers of fluoropolymers.? The combination of this expertise with renewable energy generation is part of Daikin's strategy to achieve nearly-Zero-Energy Buildings (nZEB) in the foreseeable future.
