Advanced Heart Failure Still Kills 1 in 3 Within Three ... - Health.com

THURSDAY, May 30 (HealthDay News) ? Patients with advanced heart failure have much better survival odds today than 20 years ago, but one in three still dies within three years of their diagnosis, researchers report.

?We are doing a good job of ensuring that patients receive the latest therapies for heart failure, but we still have a lot more work to do,? study senior author Dr. Tamara Horwich, an assistant professor of cardiology at the University of California, Los Angeles, David Geffen School of Medicine, said in a UCLA news release.

?It is very sobering that despite recent improvements, a third of advanced heart-failure patients aren?t surviving past three years,? Horwich added.

In people with heart failure, the heart can?t effectively pump blood to the rest of the body. The increasingly common condition affects almost 6 million people in the United States.

For the study, published in the May issue of Circulation: Heart Failure, the researchers examined outcomes in more than 2,500 adults diagnosed with ?heart failure with reduced ejection fraction,? which is characterized by a weak heart muscle.

The patients were divided into three groups based on when they were treated: 1993 through 1998; 1999 through 2004; and 2005 through 2010. The researchers followed the patients for three years after they were diagnosed.

The study revealed dramatic differences. Patients treated from 1999 on were more likely to receive life-extending drugs, such as beta-blockers and aldosterone antagonists, as well as devices to help stabilize irregular heart rhythms, such as implantable cardioverter defibrillators. Whereas just 15.5 percent of patients used beta-blockers from 1993 to 1998, more than 87 percent used them between 2005 and 2010, the study pointed out.

The increased use of these treatments coincided with publication of the results of clinical trials, and the development of treatment guidelines, the researchers noted.

Prevalence of sudden cardiac death has also decreased, the study showed. At the three-year follow-up point, sudden death declined from 10.1 percent between 1993 and 1998 to 4.6 percent between 2005 and 2010.

Overall mortality rates also decreased over the course of the study. After taking risk factors such as age and gender into account, the investigators found that patients treated between 2005 and 2010 were 42 percent less likely than those in the earliest treatment group to die from any cause.

People who may have died suddenly in the past are living longer thanks to widespread use of implantable cardioverter defibrillators, the authors noted. This trend may be one reason why a shift occurred in the manner of death over the course of the study.

The researchers found patient mortality from progressive heart failure increased from 11.6 percent between 1993 and 1998 to nearly 20 percent between 2005 and 2010. The need for emergency heart transplants also increased over time.

Many of those patients would have died sooner in the earlier eras, said study author Dr. Gregg Fonarow, a UCLA professor of cardiovascular medicine and science.

?For patients with the most advanced heart failure, treatment options used to be limited to heart transplantation ? or face early death,? Fonarow said in the news release.

?This study demonstrates that with improvements in medical therapy and availability of implanted devices, survival for these patients has improved considerably. What was once considered an end-stage, terminal disease state has, through implementation of innovative treatments, evolved into a manageable, but still challenging, condition,? he explained.

However, more studies are still needed to explore new treatments for heart failure patients, the researchers added.

Samsung Galaxy S4 wireless charging demo with third party accessory

Samsung hasn?t quite got its wireless charging to market yet, but it shouldn?t be too far off now. We?re expecting the official accessories for the S4?- that?s the wireless charging cover?and ?wireless charging pad?- to arrive in June. That hasn?t stopped third-party manufactures from releasing their own accessories though and we?re now starting to see some demo videos of these emerge.

Below you can see a wireless charging demo for the Samsung Galaxy S4 using third-party accessories. The kit in the demo doesn?t quite fit as well as it could, but with a price tag of around ?20/?25 it?s a fair bit cheaper than the official Samsung accessories. This is where a plastic back cover comes in handy, as it should eventually flex enough for you to fit the wireless receiver in without the cover popping off. The S4 charging cover is designed to fit the contours of the S4 more precisely, so it will be a flush fit in comparison.

However, there is another advantage of using a third-party kit in that you can use the receiver with other cases, such as the S View Flip cover. The S4 kit uses a replacement cover rather than a receiver, so this isn?t possible.

If you are buying a third-party wireless charging kit as opposed to the official one, it?s worth noting that the receiver needs to be specific to the S4 (so that the prongs fit correctly) and that the output is strong enough. The kit in the demo has a 15000mA base with a 1000mA receiver. There are lower output kits available, but these may not be enough to provide a good charge as there is usually a power loss of around 30% when it comes to wireless charging. The charger also needs to be of the Qi wireless charging standard.

The uploader of the video, veryannoyingname, has confirmed that the NFC does still work once the wireless charging kit is in place.

NYPD: Bynes wasn't touched inappropriately

Amanda Bynes in 2010.

Amanda Bynes was not touched inappropriately during her Thursday arrest, contrary to claims the actress made on Twitter, the New York Police Department said in a statement Tuesday.

?Internal Affairs investigators have found no evidence to corroborate Ms. Bynes? allegations,? the department said in a statement. ?To the contrary, a credible civilian witness who was with the officers throughout told investigators that none touched Ms. Bynes inappropriately or otherwise engaged in misconduct at any time.?

Bynes was arrested Thursday after police were called to her New York apartment after reports that she was smoking marijuana in the lobby. She reportedly later threw a bong out the 36th floor window of her apartment. Bynes has said the item was "just a vase" and her attorney pointed out in court that no bong was found.

In a tweet sent on Saturday, Bynes accused responding police of sexually touching her, saying one "slapped my vagina."

Bynes was taken into custody and released Friday morning. She is due to return to court in July.

Tim Cook talks about 'the future of iOS OS X' Ive, Cue have been working on

During an interview tonight at the D11 conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook made a few references to what we can expect at his company's WWDC 2013 event in a few weeks. As expected, he mentioned we'll see the future of iOS and OS X revealed there, and directly referenced the recent management shakeup. Craig Federighi is running both teams, and Cook mentioned designer Jony Ive has been "really key" to this version of iOS. He left it up to interviewer Kara Swisher to decide if the changes made are as dramatic as have been reported, stating only that collaboration has been enhanced, with an "amped up" intersection of hardware, software and services.

Another name dropped is that of Eddy Cue, who is busy heading up work on services since Scott Forstall's departure. We'll have to wait until WWDC to find out the fruits of the various executives' labor but Cook did leave us with this to chew on: "The whole concept was to tighten the groups even more, so we could spend more time finding magic in intersections. Seven months later, give or take, I think it has been an incredibly great change."

S.African banks ease pace of unsecured lending

By Helen Nyambura-Mwaura

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's banks have cooled the pace of unsecured lending amid fears of rising impairments from weak growth in the continent's top economy, central bank data on Monday showed.

The market for unsecured loans, which are not backed by collateral, has grown rapidly in recent years as the country's leading banks such as Standard Bank joined niche lenders African Bank Investments and Capitec Bank Holdings in chasing their higher margins.

Unsecured credit rose by nearly a quarter in March, to 453 billion rand, from a year ago, the Reserve Bank said, easing back from a peak annual growth rate of 30 percent in November 2012.

The central bank repeated that levels of unsecured credit, accounting for over 12 percent of total banking assets in the economy, were still too small to pose a risk to the wider South African financial system.

But supervisors from the central bank have "engaged" with selected banks on the high growth rate of unsecured loans and continue to monitor the segment for any potential risk, Deputy Governor Lesetja Kganyago told reporters at a briefing.

Analysts and investors have been increasingly worried African Bank Investments and Capitec Bank Holdings could be hit by a wave of souring loans.

African Bank, which specialises in unsecured loans to low-income borrowers, posted a 26 percent drop in first-half profit this month and wrote off 445 million rand of bad loans, sparking a rout in its share price.

The Reserve Bank said that, overall, impaired advances fell to 4.1 percent of gross loans at the end of December 2012, from 4.7 percent a year earlier. It did not strip out the figure for unsecured loans.

Growth is slowing in Africa's largest economy due to weak global demand and unemployment levels stuck above 25 percent. Despite the tough climate, household debt averages more than three quarters of disposable income.

"Generally speaking, there is stress in the market in this specific segment and in this business line and it's obvious from the increased impairments and the pain that some smaller banks are taking from this," said Moody's senior analyst Nondas Nicolaides.

"For the bigger banks, although we will see increased impairments in this business line, their overall impaired loans to total loans is actually trending down, so it doesn't make a big difference."

The central bank said it was still comfortable with the levels of unsecured credit in the market. Retail unsecured credit exposure to gross credit exposure was 3.9 percent in March 2013, from 3.5 percent a year earlier.

For the "big four" banks - Standard Bank, FirstRand, Absa and Nedbank - a big part of unsecured exposure is to middle-income earners, who are usually existing clients.

Capitec shares closed 3.7 percent lower and those of African Bank lost nearly 3 percent.

The National Credit Regulator, which also monitors credit extended by non-banking institutions such as retailers, has been holding workshops in low income areas encouraging those drowning in debt to get help.

Oil falls below $94 a barrel on US holiday

The price of oil fell Monday as traders concerned about global energy demand took profits ahead of economic data from China and the United States.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark oil for July delivery was down 50 cents to $93.65 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 10 cents to $94.15 a barrel on Friday.

Analysts said traders took profits before May unemployment data is released Tuesday in Washington, which should help clarify the state of the recovery in the world's biggest economy.

"We're starting to build confidence in the economic data, but that's not going to stop anyone from taking money off the table ahead of a long weekend," Carl Larry of Oil Outlooks and Opinions said in a market commentary, referring to Monday's Memorial Day holiday in the U.S.

Monday was also a public holiday in Britain.

The global economic picture was clouded last week by a private survey showing weak Chinese manufacturing. That raised questions about the strength of oil demand in the world's No. 2 economy.

Qinwei Wang, an economist with Capital Economics, said that recent Chinese indicators suggest that "general economic conditions remain downbeat." The more closely watched official manufacturing survey is due Saturday, Wang said.

Markets will also be watching Friday's meeting at its Vienna headquarters of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

"We anticipate that OPEC will stick with its official production target of 30 million barrels per day," said a report from Commerzbank in Frankfurt. "Saudi Arabia and the other Arab Gulf states see no reason for the moment to comply with the demands of individual OPEC states to implement measures aimed at shoring up prices. Thus the oversupply on the oil market will remain in place for the time being."

In April, OPEC's output averaged 30.46 million barrel a day.

Brent crude, a benchmark for many international oil varieties, was down 8 cents to $102.56 a barrel on Nymex.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline lost 0.003 cents to $2.8256 a gallon.

? Heating oil rose 0.01 cent to $2.8642 per gallon.

? Natural gas added 5 cents to $4.336 per 1,000 cubic feet.

In her latest film, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, she?s exploring her roots in Lahore, Pakistan, with her contemporary lifestyle of crisscrossing borders to tell another tale of East meets West.

Adapted from the award-winning book of the same name by Pakistani author Mohsin Hamid, the film aspires to show the human side of terrorism.

Ms. Nair is known for her earlier films such as the Oscar-nominated "Salaam Bombay!" "Monsoon Wedding," "Vanity Fair," and "Namesake."

Esha Chhabra spoke with Nair about her latest film and her vision to bring to filmmaking to communities that lack the resources. She starts close to home in Kampala, Uganda, with Maisha Lab that?s nurturing the talent of East African filmmakers.

What propelled you to make the Reluctant Fundamentalist?

Actually it came from visiting Pakistan for the first time in 2004?2005. My father was from Lahore. So even though I grew up in India, I grew up like a Lahori- speaking Urdu, learning poetry. My movies were already popular there, and I was invited to come speak. So, here was a culture that was deeply familiar and yet forbidden to an Indian. That?s why I was inspired to make something contemporary about Pakistan because as Indian directors, we only tend to address Pakistan in partition stories ? more historical, less contemporary.

So I was eager to do that, and then in a time when there is increasingly a separation between the Western world and Islamic world.

Around the same time, I had been given a manuscript of the book, before it was published. And I just loved it ? it gave me the opportunity to make modern Lahore but also create a dialogue with America. I, like [the book's author] Mohsin [Hamid], have lived half my life in these worlds, so I know these worlds intimately and [they] speak to me in a deep way. And politically it was very exciting ? so this script gave me that chance.

To bridge East and West in a film is a tall task. Did you have a specific intent with this film that you wanted to achieve in this rather global debate?

The intent of the film is to create a real dialogue ? to show how there are different points of view. And so often the world is reduced to myopia, not knowing the other side. And also there are so many people like us who cross borders. We are in a more globalized world, more so than when I was growing up.

So I wanted to make a film to show the complicatedness, the interconnectedness of our world on a fundamental level ? spiritually, economically, and in the realm of terror. And to create a genuine dialogue, a bridge.

In another world, the Pakistani man and the American man would really understand each other. But the world will not allow them to mix.

So, it?s about what we think of America and what America thinks of us. But made from love on both sides ? I am at home, literally, in both of these worlds.

Over 10 years after 9/11, as a storyteller, do you feel that we are trying to understand each other better or is that schism still strong due to politics?

My feeling is that we really want to understand each other now. People are fed up with war. The Americans themselves, which is a nation of 350 million or more, and I?ve met with many of them in presenting this film to audiences. And they?re saying that it?s about time we know ? after all, there are human beings on both sides. And it?s about time to get rid of the stereotype. But how do we get rid of the stereotype?

Were you able to shoot the film in Lahore or did it have to be staged elsewhere?

We shot for four days in Lahore ? all the exteriors. I couldn?t bring actors into Pakistan without insurance. So, that?s why we did it this way.

Delhi and Lahore are sister cities. They were built in the same time, same style. So, if you know Lahore, you can recreate it in Delhi.

However, all the music came from Lahore for this film. The draft of the script was written in Lahore. So, we did a lot of work there, and I love it there, but it would have been very risky to bring a whole crew there.

What kind of misconceptions would you like to erase about Lahore, which was such an inspiration for this film??

Lahore is the like the Venice of the East or I would say, Venice is like the Lahore of the West. It is a deeply refined city from where poetry, singing, craft, food ? all this sensuality comes from there at the highest expression of self.? The National Institute of Arts is in Lahore, and just the sheer amazing talent that comes of it is astounding to me.

So, one would never know this if you read the newspapers. You would think that it?s just drones, hijackings, and killings, which sadly the nation is ridden with. But life goes on. There is this line in the film that Pakistan was born into chaos. But as the chaos increased, the biryanis got tastier, life got more raucous? (laughs). Life continued! Life in all its forms exists in Lahore in a way that?s powerful, not ordinary.

In a lot of these films that are a dime a dozen on Pakistan, you never see the family life, you never know about the family that was bombed in the name of democracy, you don?t know their names, sometimes you don?t even know the character?s name. So, in this film, [the protagonist] Changez?s family is very important to me. In fact, Mohsin used to joke with me that we should [call it] ?Monsoon terrorist? (laughs).

Changez?s family isn?t necessarily impressed by his career in finance and Wall Street. They?re not pandering for that.

What role did Mohsin play in the filmmaking process? You?ve worked with several texts now ? "Namesake," "Vanity Fair."? How do you wrestle with these pieces of fiction?? Any different than a traditional script?

It?s genuinely just an organic process of building a relationship. If I love the story so much to inhabit it for several years and make a movie, I will love the author. There?s no question of it.

One of the greatest gifts of the Namesake has been that Jhumpa and I are like sisters now.

Both Jhumpa and Mohsin understood that film is a different medium than a book. So they were happy to have me tell their story in a manner that?s most fit for film. Mohsin took a more direct role and was one of the writers for the screenplay with Ami Boghani and William Wheeler. And he?s a complete kid at the cinema ? so he loved it.

I reinvented Erica in the film; she didn?t agree with me, the way she was in the book. But there was no resistance from Mohsin. And then I wanted a third act to the book that doesn?t exist in the story ? what happens to Changez after he comes back from America, what does he do in Pakistan?

Mohsin was very experimental in the book ? in terms of the layout, the voice ? and it was a largely internal book, consumed in Changez?s thoughts, feelings, and frustrations. How do you translate that into a film ? is that a challenge?

We kept the structure of the tea house, the nonlinear flashbacks. We had to create a reason for them to meet. And we created a final act on his present day life in Lahore. Also, the ending in the book was very ambiguous. In a film, we could not leave that vague; we had to determine what happened.

That is always a challenge on how to make it less internal. That?s what I love to do in cinema ? how to have the images speak of emotions and remove the words.

We also had Riz Ahmed, who plays Changez, and he spent time with Pakistani Wall Street bankers to get a sense of their high-flying life ? and a lot came from that. Imagine you work all day, enjoy in the evenings but then come home to an empty flat with a beer bottle in the fridge and no one to greet you. So, that?s a cinematic moment where I can convey emotions and ideas without text. That adds a lot of layers and textures.

You have said many times that you only choose films that only you can do. And many of these films fall outside the parameters of the big production houses. Do you ever find it frustrating as a filmmaker to have to find alternative sources of funding and support?

No, I prefer to be poor and free. I refuse to say harder, or I refuse to do it. I like to work with studios when the subject is right for it. This subject would have [been] censored and hindered if I had gone to the studios ? it would have never been what I wanted to do. So, there was question that I wanted to do this independently.

I am just so grateful that Doha Film Festival stayed with us as steadfast partners till the end. And there are other films that should be made with the studios, and I will make them.

You?ve also been pushing for the voice of new, young filmmakers with your film lab in Kampala, Uganda. Can you give us an update on Maisha?

It?s for East Africa ? Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. It?s a free school and we have now trained over 600 alumni over the last eight years, and all of them are literally working in media. I?ve just come back from Doha[, Qatar,] where we had a Maisha documentary lab where we training all kinds of filmmakers ? Qataris, Palestinians.

The mantra is ?If we don?t tell our own stories, no one else will." So it?s necessary for us to tell these stories.

We have 10 labs in the course of a year in these four countries. We [have] two big annual labs in Kampala ? they make 20-minute films. Our films have won 26 awards internationally.... And we have created six feature filmmakers.

My goal was to create local cinema and of the highest standards. It?s become a beacon for artists here since there aren?t too many places to get good training on the continent. And I invite writers, directors, actors from my film circle to come and lead workshops. People want to do good, they just need to know how. So Maisha is a place for them to share their skills.

(AP) ? Ryan Vogelsong felt the best he had in months, then it all ended on one painful swing.

The right-hander broke his throwing hand chasing an inside fastball after pitching himself toward his first win in seven starts, and the San Francisco Giants returned from a terrible road trip to beat the Washington Nationals 8-0 on Monday night.

Vogelsong was injured while fouling a ball off his hand in the fifth inning. He grimaced in pain while grabbing the hand ? knowing immediately it was serious. He was quickly examined near the batter's box and left the game.

Vogelsong broke two bones along the right pinkie and dislocated a knuckle the area that the medical staff couldn't get popped back into place. He was scheduled for surgery Tuesday morning at Stanford and said he likely would have pins inserted to stabilize the hand and help speed the healing process.

"We're not talking about Tommy John or anything here," Vogelsong said, his eyes misty. "Basically as fast as we can get it to heal so I can start throwing again."

Nationals manager Davey Johnson announced after the game that reliever Ryan Mattheus broke his pitching hand punching a locker in frustration Sunday. The right-hander allowed five runs in one inning of Washington's 13-4 loss to the San Diego Padres, but didn't tell the team about the injury until just before Monday's game.

"Last night after the game he came in and was in the locker room and banged his glove against his locker with his hand in it," Johnson said. "His hand didn't swell up but when he went out to throw today his hand swelled up and he couldn't throw the ball."

Vogelsong (2-4) snapped a six-start winless stretch with just his second victory of 2013 and first since April 11 against the Cubs at Wrigley Field and seemed back on track.

He walked off to warm ovation as Nick Noonan pinch hit. Vogelsong allowed three hits in five scoreless innings and lowered his ERA from 8.06 to 7.19.

"It's really a shame because tonight was the Vogey that we know, the way he threw all of last year, good stuff," manager Bruce Bochy said. "It's a tough one. I feel bad for him. I know he felt really good tonight. You've got to deal with these things. He'll be back, hopefully, in a couple months."

Brandon Belt hit a solo home run, matched his career best with four hits and scored three runs as San Francisco pounded a season-high 17 hits. Angel Pagan hit an RBI double and two-run single for San Francisco, also making a great leaping catch against the center-field wall.

Andres Torres had three hits and drove in a run and Marco Scutaro added an RBI single among his two hits.

Vogelsong got the defensive gem from Pagan when the center fielder slammed into the wall on Adam LaRoche's deep fly in the second.

The 2011 All-Star ended a six-start winless stretch in which he had lost his last two outings and gone 0-3. He was tagged for eight runs ? three earned ? and six hits in two innings for his shortest outing of the year last Wednesday at Toronto.

"It was awesome," Belt said. "The special thing about this team is everybody roots for everybody. We were as happy for him as can be, and it's tough to see him go down like this. But we know he'll be back, and strong and ready to go."

Javier Lopez took over for Vogelsong in the top of the sixth and received a little bit more warm up time. Three more relievers finished for the Giants' sixth shutout. San Francisco snapped a three-game skid after a 1-5 road trip through Toronto and Colorado.

The Giants have until next Tuesday before they need a fifth starter.

Bryce Harper went 0 for 4 in his return to the Nationals' lineup after last season's NL Rookie of the Year missed two games with a bruised left knee. He was hurt in a hard collision with the outfield wall a week earlier at Dodger Stadium that also caused him to need 11 stitches on his chin.

Left-hander Zach Duke (0-1) lasted just 3 1-3 innings in a spot start for Ross Detwiler, who is sidelined with back spasms. Duke allowed four runs and seven hits in his first start of the year.

Washington was shut out for the sixth time.

Vogelsong retired the first eight Nationals hitters in order.

The right-hander lasted only 2 2-3 innings in his first career start against Washington last year, allowing eight runs on nine hits with two walks.

"That's the best I've felt in a long time, from a mental aspect, physical aspect, everything felt good," he said. "It was nice to be able to get out there and have everything I've been working on for the last couple weeks kind of fall into place. From that standpoint it's a good place to start when I come back."

Scutaro extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a third-inning single. The second baseman fielded Roger Bernadina's grounder in the fifth but dropped the ball in exchange from glove to hand, for the Giants' 15th error in their last eight games.

Notes: Nationals OF Jayson Werth, on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring, is expected to need at least two more weeks to heal after a second MRI showed he "has some problems in there," Johnson said. "He's going to rest a bit." ... A moment of silence was held for the Oklahoma tornado victims before the national anthem. ... RHP Matt Cain (3-2) starts for the Giants in Tuesday night's middle game against righty Stephen Strasburg (2-5). ... San Francisco's Buster Posey has hit safely in 11 of his last 12. ... Belt's homer was the Giants' 21st at home. Last season through their first 23 games at AT&T Park, they had hit just six HRs.

Emily Esfahani Smith at The Atlantic: Is Sex Still Sexy?

There are fully one-billion things wrong with this article which seeks to chastise Maine college students for writing and acting out a series of skits in order to talk to fellow students openly about sex in a sex-positive manner that will reinforce Yes Means Yes narratives and reduce slut-shaming and rape culture mentalities on campus (from their website: "A performance-based presentation about consent, boundaries and healthy relationships").

Smith leads by criticizing the skits for being too open and too heavy on communication -- which we all know is Not Sexy! -- by saying:

But the exhibitionism of Speak About It kills this mystery and longing?it leaves little to the imagination. As the writer and critic Cristina Nehring, author of A Vindication of Love, tells me in an interview, "Where there is no distance and no sense of transgression at all, where anything goes and everything shows, there is no erotic chemistry.
And ends with:
If we want sex to be sexy again, perhaps we should speak less about it.
Did everyone get that? Where there is no sense of transgression (and since Smith and Nehring are both professional writers, I assume they understand that the commonly used definition of "transgression" is "a violation of limits") there is no erotic chemistry, and therefore we should stop communicating so much about sex, even if the goal is to educate people on sexual assault and healthy consent.

I really hope that Smith is not outright suggesting that sex isn't sexy if there's not always the lingering change that it is actually rape instead. And yet that is what she is effectively advocating, even if she doesn't realize it. She is recycling old "communication kills the mood" narratives, and those narratives are an integral part of rape culture since they are regularly used to silence people in order to preventing them from asserting boundaries until whooops those boundaries have already been crossed. And these harmful narratives are deliberately employed by rapists in order to render their victims vulnerable to transgressions against their will.

What frustrates me most about this intellectually lazy article is that there is no way that Smith immersed herself this deeply into the Speak About It performance materials to write her article that she could somehow miss why and how communication is integral to preventing sexual assault. Speak About It very clearly explains how communication empowers the vulnerable to assert their boundaries and provides crucial visual representations of what healthy sex can look like in contrast to the misinformation disseminated through popular culture. I can only assume that Smith did grasp the fundamentals but felt like they were less important than criticizing these proactive students for Doing Sex Wrong on the grounds that their sexuality doesn't align with her personal narratives of what is erotic and what isn't.?

I invite everyone in the comments to pick out their favorite utterly-terrible quotes from this garbage article, but mine will always be the part where Smith criticizes a man for asking his partner if she wants a Gatorade after sex. Smith thinks this is a perfect example of non-erotic sex; my personal response is that hell, yes, I want a drink after sex. There's ice in the freezer, and cups above the sink. And thanks.

Are Beyonce and Jay-Z expecting another baby?

Celebs

Beyonce at The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute benefit.

It's the hottest not-yet-confirmed story in entertainment at the moment: Are Beyonce and Jay-Z about to announce that baby No. 2 is on the way?

E! Online and other outlets seem positive this is the case, though thus far "sources" are the only place information has come from -- no one's spokesperson has stepped forward to put the official stamp on it.

But perhaps Beyonce herself reportedly did, on a since-deleted post on her Instagram account (see link for screen shot of post). According to several outlets, shortly after the initial rumors began surfacing, the singer apparently posted: "I can?t stop the rumors from starting, and I can?t really change peoples minds who believe them, all I can do is sit back and laugh at these low life people who have nothing better to do than talk about me.?

So since Beyonce won't say "yes" or "no," what's fueling this burning question?

  • In April, Beyonce told Shape magazine that they would definitely have more children in the future, saying ?I?ll probably start after this tour.? Her first, Blue Ivy, is 16 months old. She hit the road with her "Mrs. Carter Show World Tour" that month, and will be on the road until September -- but maybe she just couldn't wait.
  • Her appearance at the Met Gala in early May featured her in a "stomach-concealing Givenchy gown," as E! Online described it, and as the site suggested, concealment could only mean one thing.
  • On May 13, the New York Post went into full rumor mode, saying that "music insiders are chattering" about her newly-pregnant status, and noted that photos from her tour seem to reveal a baby bump.
  • On May 14, the singer postponed a concert in Belgium, saying in a statement she was "advised by her doctors to rest as a result of dehydration and exhaustion." She posted a note to her Tumblr page later in apology, noting "I've never postponed a show in my life."
  • Other celebrities like Russell Simmons are already taking the rumors as fact, and tweeting congrats.
  • People are just excited to read about Bey's comings and goings, as indicated by her recent controversial trip to Cuba with Jay-Z and the fact that the announcement of her first pregnancy -- on the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards -- set a Guinness World Record for most tweets per second related to a single event.

Meanwhile, Beyonce is unlikely to ease off of work any time soon, regardless of whatever announcement she may make. Other E! sources are saying the tour won't be affected by the rumored pregnancy.

Beyonce will be heard soon, though -- she's the voice of Queen Tara in the animated film "Epic," which opens in theaters on May 24.

Axio returns as Melon, an EEG headband that'll help you learn to focus

Insert Coin meet Melon, a headband that'll help you learn to focus

The quantified self movement's gaining steam, with companies creating all sorts of gadgets to track our activity levels, sleeping habits and even what's going on inside our heads. Melon's an EEG headband that taps into your brain's inner workings to show you how well you maintain mental focus. We actually saw Melon's prototype predecessor last year when it was called Axio, and while this new band packs largely the same components, the design's been refined to a much thinner profile. As before, its got a trio of electrodes for sensing brainwaves, a NeuroSky chip for filtering out extraneous electrical noise and Bluetooth 4.0 for offloading data wirelessly. It sends data to iPhones (Android's in development) running the Melon app, which translates that info into a focus graph -- generally speaking, the higher the neural activity in your pre-frontal cortex, the higher your level of focus. Users then input contextual data tags like time of day, type of activity and the surrounding environmental conditions to allow them to track variables that may affect their focus.

Wisconsin Gov. Promises To Use Internet Sales Tax To Lower Income Tax

oprah you get a car - you get a tax break everyone gets a tax break and you getIt sounds like a nice idea, if you don’t own a calculator. The governor of Wisconsin wants to give his residents a tax break, using the revenue from a proposed Internet Sales tax to lower the state’s income tax. “I want to make clear, should federal Marketplace legislation become law, my intention would be for any resulting additional revenue be used to provide individual income tax relief for Wisconsin?s taxpayers,” Wrote Governor Scott Walker to members of Congress. The Marketplace Fairness Act will permit state governments to collect sales taxes from any business that both grosses more than $1M in revenue and has a substantial operating base in their region. Earlier this month, a draft of the bill?passed the U.S. Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support, but faces tougher opposition in the House, where Republican leadership is concerned that the law will be a logistical nightmare for small businesses. Although, I wouldn’t get too excited. With 5 million residents in Wisconsin and an estimated $95M in savings, that’s about $16/per person, assuming it would be distributed evenly. If Forrester’s research is any indication, the sales tax would?cost?the average American roughly $167 per year, so it’s a net loss. If it’s unevenly distributed, a few already wealthy people will be slightly wealthier. Still, it’s a nice gesture.

Oldest evidence of split between Old World monkeys and apes: Primate fossils are 25 million years old

May 15, 2013 ? Two fossil discoveries from the East African Rift reveal new information about the evolution of primates, according to a study published online in Nature this week led by Ohio University scientists.

The team's findings document the oldest fossils of two major groups of primates: the group that today includes apes and humans (hominoids), and the group that includes Old World monkeys such as baboons and macaques (cercopithecoids).

Geological analyses of the study site indicate that the finds are 25 million years old, significantly older than fossils previously documented for either of the two groups.

Both primates are new to science, and were collected from a single fossil site in the Rukwa Rift Basin of Tanzania. Rukwapithecus fleaglei is an early hominoid represented by a mandible preserving several teeth. Nsungwepithecus gunnelli is an early cercopithecoid represented by a tooth and jaw fragment.

The primates lived during the Oligocene epoch, which lasted from 34 to 23 million years ago. For the first time, the study documents that the two lineages were already evolving separately during this geological period.

"The late Oligocene is among the least sampled intervals in primate evolutionary history, and the Rukwa field area provides a first glimpse of the animals that were alive at that time from Africa south of the equator," said Nancy Stevens, an associate professor of paleontology in Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine who leads the paleontological team.

Documenting the early evolutionary history of these groups has been elusive, as there are few fossil-bearing deposits of the appropriate age, Stevens explained. Using an approach that dated multiple minerals contained within the rocks, team geologists could determine a precise age for the specimens.

"The rift setting provides an advantage in that it preserves datable materials together with these important primate fossils," said lead geologist Eric Roberts of James Cook University in Australia.

Prior to these finds, the oldest fossil representatives of the hominoid and cercopithecoid lineages were recorded from the early Miocene, at sites dating millions of years younger.

The new discoveries are particularly important for helping to reconcile a long-standing disagreement between divergence time estimates derived from analyses of DNA sequences from living primates and those suggested by the primate fossil record, Stevens said. Studies of clock-like mutations in primate DNA have indicated that the split between apes and Old

World monkeys occurred between 30 million and 25 million years ago.

"Fossils from the Rukwa Rift Basin in southwestern Tanzania provide the first real test of the hypothesis that these groups diverged so early, by revealing a novel glimpse into this late Oligocene terrestrial ecosystem," Stevens said.

The new fossils are the first primate discoveries from this precise location within the Rukwa deposits, and two of only a handful of known primate species from the entire late Oligocene, globally.

The scientists scanned the specimens in the Ohio University's MicroCT scanner, allowing them to create detailed 3-dimensional reconstructions of the ancient specimens that were used for comparisons with other fossils.

"This is another great example that underscores how modern imaging and computational approaches allow us to address more refined questions about vertebrate evolutionary history," said Patrick O'Connor, co-author and professor of anatomy in Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.

In addition to the new primates, Rukwa field sites have produced several other fossil vertebrate and invertebrate species new to science. The late Oligocene interval is interesting because it provides a final snapshot of the unique species inhabiting Africa prior to large-scale faunal exchange with Eurasia that occurred later in the Cenozoic Era, Stevens said.

A key aspect of the Rukwa Rift Basin project is the interdisciplinary nature of the research team, with paleontologists and geologists working together to reconstruct vertebrate evolutionary history in the context of the developing East African Rift System.

"Since its inception this project has employed a multifaceted approach for addressing a series of large-scale biological and geological questions centered on the East African Rift System in Tanzania," O'Connor said.

The team's research, funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Leakey Foundation and the National Geographic Society, underscores the integration of paleontological and geological approaches that are essential for addressing complex issues in vertebrate evolutionary history, the scientists noted.

Co-authors on the study are Patrick O'Connor, Cornelia Krause and Eric Gorscak of Ohio University, Erik Seiffert of SUNY Stony Brook University, Eric Roberts of James Cook University in Australia, Mark Schmitz of Boise State University, Sifa Ngasala of Michigan State University, Tobin Hieronymus of Northeast Ohio Medical University and Joseph Temu of the Tanzania Antiquities Unit.

Need a handgun in Chicago? Here are 1,300 options (interactive)

At one point last January, Brad Dixon says he was entertaining so many offers for his collection of assault rifles, shotguns and ammunition that he was getting a new text message every 10 minutes.

Dixon, a 26-year-old volunteer firefighter in Mebane, N.C., is a prolific user of ArmsList.com, the premier website for private sales and trades of firearms. During a recent surge in demand for rifles and high-capacity magazines, Dixon was able to sell his AR-15s for $1,300 or more apiece, garnering profits of hundreds or even thousands of dollars on each sale. (Dixon assembled some of the weapons himself, and sold others unused in the original box.) During the height of a recent run on AR-15s and extended clips, driven by a fear that Washington might ban them, a government issue 30-round magazine for this military-style rifle, normally about $12, could go for $45?bullets not included.

?I?ll be honest, I?ve used the gun scare to sell my gun collection,? Dixon says. He was careful to specify that collecting guns is a hobby, not an occupation, lest he get in trouble for not having a federal license to sell firearms.

The AR-15 is an extremely potent assault weapon similar to the M16, the rifle widely used by the U.S. military. It comes in many varieties and names, including the Bushmaster XM15, one of the weapons that Newtown, Conn., shooter Adam Lanza used, and the Smith & Wesson M&P15, favored by Aurora, Colo., gunman James E. Holmes.

The AR-15 is not merely the preferred firearm of mass murderers. It is by far the most popular gun sold on ArmsList.com as well.

After the New York Times ran a long story on ArmsList.com last month that included an analysis of 170,000 ads on the site posted over a three-month period, I decided to gather my own data on the site in the spirit of independent replication. Over the past three weeks, I was able to download and analyze 235,000 ads posted over the past five months that were still active on the site between mid-April and early May.

As the Times noted, it can be difficult to know exactly how many of these postings represent unique weapons. While all ads are anonymous?the people who post ads do not even have a public username?I was able to approximate the number of unique people posting to the site using a ?Listings by this user? feature that links posts by the same person. Even when counting only one gun per user, I was able to collect data on 54,000 handguns, rifles and shotguns advertised for sale or trade on ArmsList.com this year. Many more ads were posted for ammunition, accessories, and other ballistic accouterments.

That data led both to people like Dixon, the most frequent user of the site in my database, and to a bird's eye view of the online gun market in America.

Of the weapon advertisements that Yahoo News analyzed, 5,700 were advertised as AR-15s. Another 800 were advertised as a brand-name variety of the rifle. (ArmsList.com does not neatly categorize weapons by model and make, so in most cases this information was extracted from the text of the posts using a simple, hand-built pattern recognition program. I have open-sourced all of the code I wrote to gather and analyze the data.)

The AK-47, perhaps the most recognized assault rifle in the world, is the second most-popular gun with at least 1,200 models for sale online in the past year. All told, 19,200 handguns, 27,300 rifles, and 7,462 shotguns were listed for sale or trade on ArmsList.com at some point in the past three weeks.

Armslist.com is the largest of several major online markets for guns, ammunition and accessories. These sites operate like gun shows without the folding tables and $3 admission fees. Like Craigslist, ArmsList.com exists only to connect sellers to buyers, and does not play a role in mediating the transactions. Neither this hands-off treatment of transactions, nor the twelve-point Terms of Use Agreement that all new users must actively agree to, have protected it from legal scrutiny. Nowhere is that scrutiny more intense than in Chicago.

Guns and the Great Lakes

At least two recent murders have been linked to weapons purchased on ArmsList.com: Those committed by Radcliffe Haughton, who shot and killed his wife, two other women, and himself at a spa outside Milwaukee in October 2012, and Demetry Smirnov, a Russian immigrant who stalked and murdered a 36-year-old Chicago woman named Jitka Vesel after she rebuffed his romantic overtures. Neither man was legally entitled to purchase a firearm in the United States at the time; Haughton had a restraining order placed against him and Smirnov was not a citizen.

Smirnov pled guilty to the crime and is serving a life sentence. The man who sold him the .40-caliber handgun he used to shoot Vesel a dozen times, Benedict Ladera, received a one-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to the illegal sale of a firearm to an out-of-state resident.

In fact, the Lake Michigan region, including Chicago and Milwaukee, was among the most active territories for ArmsList.com sellers and buyers during the period Yahoo News studied. In the past four months, at least 1,300 handguns were advertised for sale or trade within 150 miles of Chicago, where there have been more than 100 homicides already in 2013. There were 1,700 rifles advertised as well. Over 400 people in this same radius posted wanted ads for handguns.

The following map charts the number of ArmsList.com postings by both sellers and would-be buyers in the region since mid-April:

It is far from clear that there is any causal chain between ArmsList.com activity and violent crime beyond the two murders linked to the site?or that ArmsList.com is any more culpable for selling weapons linked to murders than any of the other means by which criminals can buy a gun. That question is quite literally on trial in Cook County, Ill., Circuit Court, where the family of Smirnov?s victim is now suing ArmsList.com, alleging that the site facilitates unlawful interstate gun sales because it has "designed its site to not require the input of any verifiable identification by buyers or sellers, such as a driver?s license number, to demonstrate residency in a particular state." The case is ongoing.

At the present time, the odds that Congress will pass any sort of expansion on background checks for online gun purchases, much less a ban on assault weapons, appear very long. Barring such an action, sites like ArmsList.com are free to operate with the freedom of a gun show and the namelessness of the Internet.
