Obama wants gun violence measures passed in 2013

(AP) ? Recalling the shooting rampage that killed 20 first graders as the worst day of his presidency, President Barack Obama on Sunday pledged to put his "full weight" behind legislation aimed at preventing gun violence.

Obama voiced skepticism about the National Rifle Association's proposal to put armed guards in schools following the Dec. 14 tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. The president made his comments in an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press."

Instead, the president vowed to rally the American people around an agenda to limit gun violence, adding that he still supports increased background checks and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity bullet magazines. He left no doubt it will be one of his top priorities next year.

"It is not enough for us to say, 'This is too hard so we're not going to try,'" Obama said.

"I think there are a vast majority of responsible gun owners out there who recognize that we can't have a situation in which somebody with severe psychological problems is able to get the kind of high capacity weapons that this individual in Newtown obtained and gun down our kids," he added. "And, yes, it's going to be hard."

The president added that he's ready to meet with Republicans and Democrats, anyone with a stake in the issue.

The schoolhouse shootings, coming as families prepared for the holidays, have elevated the issue of gun violence to the forefront of public attention. Six adult staff members were also killed at the elementary school. Shooter Adam Lanza committed suicide, apparently as police closed in. Earlier, he had killed his mother at the home they shared.

The tragedy immediately prompted calls for greater gun controls. But the NRA is strongly resisting those efforts, arguing instead that schools should have armed guards for protection. Some gun enthusiasts have rushed to buy semiautomatic rifles of the type used by Lanza, fearing sales may soon be restricted.

Obama seemed unimpressed by the NRA proposal. "I am skeptical that the only answer is putting more guns in schools," he said. "And I think the vast majority of the American people are skeptical that that somehow is going to solve our problem."

The president said he intends to press the issue with the public.

"The question then becomes whether we are actually shook up enough by what happened here that it does not just become another one of these routine episodes where it gets a lot of attention for a couple of weeks and then it drifts away," Obama said. "It certainly won't feel like that to me. This is something that - you know, that was the worst day of my presidency. And it's not something that I want to see repeated."

Separately, a member of the president's cabinet said Sunday that rural America may be ready to join a national conversation about gun control. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the debate has to start with respect for the Second Amendment right to bear arms and recognition that hunting is a way of life for millions of Americans.

But Vilsack said Newtown has changed the way people see the issue. "I really believe that this is a different circumstance and a different situation," Vilsack said on CNN.

Vilsack said he thinks it's possible for Americans to come together. "It's potentially a unifying conversation," he said. "The problem is that these conversations are always couched in the terms of dividing us. This could be a unifying conversation, and Lord knows we need to be unified."

Besides passing gun violence legislation, Obama also listed deficit reduction and immigration as top priorities for 2013. A big deficit reduction deal with Republicans proved elusive this month, and Obama is now hoping Senate Democratic and Republican leaders salvage a scaled-back plan that avoids tax increases for virtually all Americans.

In addition, he issued a defense of former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who has been mentioned as one of the leading candidates to replace Leon Panetta as defense secretary.

Hagel, who opposed President George W. Bush's decision to go to war with Iraq, has been criticized in conservative circles for not being a strong enough ally of Israel. Also, many liberals and gay activists have banded against him for comments he made in 1998 about an openly gay nominee for an ambassadorship

Obama, who briefly served with Hagel in the Senate, stressed that he had yet to make a decision but called Hagel a "patriot."

Hagel "served this country with valor in Vietnam," the president said. "And (he) is somebody who's currently serving on my intelligence advisory board and doing an outstanding job."

Obama noted that Hagel had apologized for his 14-year-old remark on gays.

2012 The best of the big interviews | Pakistan Today | Latest news ...

  • Very soon, we'll have to learn to remember it isn't 2012 anymore. Meanwhile, as the curtain begins to fall on this year, we look back at some of the most interesting and insightful responses the stars gave to our questions

Your cousin Ranbir said that he was born into luxury. Can you say the same?

We weren?t brought up in luxury, as people think about the Kapoor clan. My mom (Babita) and sister (Karisma) really struggled to give me a better life. Especially my mom, because she was a single parent. Everything was very limited for us. Lolo went to college in local trains, but I escaped that because I didn?t go to college here. But I took the school bus like everyone else. We had one car and didn?t have enough money for a driver. It?s only because mom brought us up like this that we value everything we have today.

Your father, filmmaker Yash Johar, left you a legacy to take forward. Who will carry forward your name?

I may adopt. I love children and I do feel the need to take the legacy forward. I am open to it, but emotionally you have to be ready for it. Raising a child is really a huge responsibility. And I should have that time and emotional energy to give to child. How and when is a decision my mother and I will take a few years from now. My father has given me this company that I have built up, and I cannot see it dwindling into nothing.

Do you agree that because the glamour industry is full of good-looking people, temptations can be big here?.

Beautiful people exist in all industries. The IT industry, media, wherever you go, you see beauties around you. So much so that, where I stay in Tamil Nadu, my friends ask me, ?Mumbai girls are very beautiful, no?? They find every girl walking down the road beautiful. Let me tell you that one gives in to temptation, or has affairs in all fields. It?s not just the glamour industry. Yes, it exists here, but it also exists outside and I know of it.

...Does it sadden you that he (Abhishek) hasn't got to where you are?

Success and failure will happen to everybody and we cannot judge somebody's career according to that. If we didn't have failures we would be abnormal people. I think we are normal people and we face failures and successes. Life is only about how we conduct ourselves, whether we are good human beings or not. And I would be happy if he is just a good human being. When somebody tells you how well you have brought up your son and daughter, and how well-behaved they are? that is like a super successful film for me.

Do you feel that the industry is unkind to actresses after a particular time?

A filmmaker chooses an actress keeping the best interest of the film in mind. If he doesn?t cast you, it doesn?t mean there?s a personal agenda. Change is constant and if you have agreed to be part of this industry, you will have to go with the change. You cannot sit at home and crib. Instead, work hard and keep looking beautiful and be open to roles that are exciting and inspiring. Success and failure are not in my hand, but hard work and perseverance are. The biggest example of this is Amitabh Bachchan. He fought it out and reinvented himself. You have to understand the mechanics of durability and longevity and go with the flow.

What has been the wildest pass on you?

Sometimes they come asking for photographs? and when we pose for the camera, they put their arm around straight on my butt (laughs). I like this when people come upto me. I am a very accessible person.

Some people say you must have had plastic surgery to look like this.

I want to tell these people that instead of whining and criticising, why don?t you move out of your comfort zone, zip your mouth and slog it out? Then let?s talk! There will be a visible change not just in your appearance, but also in your attitude. But if you?re a lazy bum, hooked to TV, and cannot give up your food because you know you can undergo cosmetic surgery., you?re damned! It doesn?t work like that. Anything that is plastic melts in no time. Then let?s talk! There will be a visible change not just in your appearance, but also in your attitude. But if you?re a lazy bum, hooked to TV, and cannot give up your food because you know you can undergo cosmetic surgery.

How does your cricket franchise work?

My team was bogged down with the expectations of being part of a filmstar?s team?with no proper reasons. So for four years, KKR struggled. Though many other IPL teams faced problems too, we came in for a lot of flak. The lesson I learned from this is that you don?t have to look good if you are not delivering. Of course, I am a movie star, so I have to look good whether I am delivering or not. But I must say that KKR is like any other IPL team and it is trying very hard to do better and better every season.

Are you scared of ever losing the fan following you have now?

If the adulation has not affected me now, how will it affect me at all? There are people who take their onscreen image seriously. Luckily, I don?t. Rajesh Khanna is the classic case of a superstar forgotten until he passed away? I have never seen or heard of such unparalleled adulation as his. I was happy to witness a sea of humanity descend on his funeral. But I wish it had all happened when he was alive! He would have been very happy. Love and respect should be accorded in your lifetime. Honestly, I wouldn?t want such pandemonium when I am dead and gone. It?s no use then, because I won?t be able to see or feel the love.

How does a superstar's life look at 90?

I was never pleased by my stardom. I have always said that there shouldn't be a term like 'star' for an actor. It is a marketing term, coined by the marketing men. It is the work that I chose to accept that mattered to me and preoccupied me. I always lived a normal life and never got carried away into another world of another personality who sought pampering and constant attention. When you do that, you acquire a false, unapproachable personality.

Tell us, why people should go to the theatres for Son Of Sardaar?

I don?t have to tell the audiences anything to lure them. They decide whether a film will be good or bad by watching its first promo. After that, whatever promotions we show, they?re just a reminder that says there is a movie coming up. Impressions are made on the first day of the film. All the super hit films in the past made their mark with their first promos. They decide whether a film will be good or bad by watching its first promo.

...Suddenly, it felt as though Priyanka was an untouchable.

I think it?s great to be flawed. I am hugely flawed and I like it this way. That?s the fun of life. You fall, get up, make mistakes, learn from them, be human and be you.

Certain people in the industry believe you exude a kind of arrogance. How did you control the damage?

People may have found it difficult to approach me and I realised that and have worked on it. I used to be socially shy. Now I have become a social animal. I go out, meet and interact with people. I made an effort and I am really enjoying that phase now. Beyond that, I cannot change who I am. I am a Piscean, and they have a lovingly detached attitude towards life.

At 45 you still look so fit. Tell us: how important are face-lifts and plastic surgeries after a certain age?

Youth is a lifestyle; it?s not a blessing from God. If we treat our bodies as if they are not the most precious things we possess, then obviously we will show wear and tear. We?re like a good pair of jeans. If we take care of them, they?ll remain classic forever, but if we batter and abuse them, they?ll look like tattered old rags. What I?m trying to say is, plastic surgery doesn?t make you fit, it makes you lazy. A) It?s always obvious, so respect is lost almost instantly. B) What is wrong with growing old gracefully with health and dignity? Put down the steroids and the needles and go outside and play with your children and your children?s children, that?s my ?expensive? secret.

Trishala wants to get into movies but you are dead against it. Why?

None of my sisters are in the movies, nor are my nieces going to be. That?s how Dutt sahab, my dad, brought up the girls in the family and I am just carrying his thought forward. If he had been alive today, Trishala wouldn?thave thought about getting into movies.

What do you have to say about ghost-directing your films?

Honestly, every label accorded to me is by the media and hugely inaccurate. So I don?t have much to say about monikers like ?perfectionist?, or ?ghost-director?. If somebody wants to cast aspersions on my relationship with my directors, then it is their lookout. However, by saying that I ghost-direct, the media has overlooked the contributions of my directors in my movies.

In an interview with Amitabh Bachchan, he said that you were na?ve back when you acted with him in Kaizad Gustad?s Boom (2003). Looking back, was your Bollywood debut scary?

It?s really an interesting observation by Mr Bachchan. I was 17 years old when I came here (to Mumbai) and I was genuinely na?ve, unlike today?s 17-year-olds, who are far sharper. I viewed everything, every person in the best possible way, and it?s not like I think that?s a bad quality. But it?s a quality that people can take advantage of. I was very trusting. I felt nobody could mean anything wrong or have bad intentions. Yes, I could have been misused or led the wrong way. But there were many different factors as to why nothing bad happened to me and why I could grow very quickly.

Is Bollywood unfair to actresses who are past their prime?

...It?s not just the film industry. It?s a mindset that exists in all industries and in every sphere of life. Women are expected to be younger and good looking. Unfortunately, that?s been the mindset for ages. And to put it simply, the film industry is a reflection of society. Let?s ask ourselves: are men and women ever considered equals?

You?re all over the place just before the release of any of your films, but not so accessible otherwise. Why?

I have a personality problem. I am extremely shy; an introvert and a private person. I lead a normal life when I am not working. I am not on Facebook, Twitter or anywhere. I like it this way. You?ll see that I don?t have a PR manager to take care of my image, because there isn?t any image that I have set out to create.

Confused About Where To Start With Home Improvement? Read ...

TIP! Have you ever looked over the handles on your doors at home? Installing brass door handles give off that rich looking shine, and really add to a home?s decor. Replace your home?s current door handles with brass ones for a new look.

Home improvement projects certainly require a lot of effort to complete. If you are inexperienced, then there is much to think about before starting a project. The following article will give you a great place to start before beginning your project.

TIP! If you have no shower in your home, you might want to consider adding one. Not only is it easier to get into and out of a shower, but a shower reduce the quantity of water consumed by your household, particularly if there are children in the home.

Pay your contractor according to the tasks they complete, rather than an hourly or daily rate. This will give you the ability to fire the contractor if the work isn?t at the quality you expected without leaving incomplete projects or the contractor requesting more money.

TIP! It?s not a bad idea at all to pause before committing to a home improvement job and consider it from a financial aspect. Look for projects that will add more value to your home so you eventually get a return on the time and money you invested.

Do not go through demolition too quickly as you start your project. Check for structural integrity in the wall cavity before you remove something. If any electrical configurations are involved, repairs may be costly.

TIP! Do you need your renovation project to be completed quickly? If so, then you should know that you are probably going to have to pay some extra money. By talking to your contractor(s), you should discover that they will be more than happy to work harder.

Winterizing your home should begin in the fall or even in the summer. Warmer air temperatures are better times for adhesive products and weatherstripping. You also will not have to insulate crawlspace pipes when the air is freezing.

TIP! Any budget can afford some home improvement. If funds are low, it is still possible to add value by doing smaller, less expensive jobs including repainting and adding some landscaping.

Weigh the pros and cons of having a security alarm set on your home when having showings. If the home is located in a sketchy neighborhood and the property is vacant, then it should be turned on.

TIP! Decide on your main style theme before you start to add customizing features onto your home. Identifying your decorating style will have a serious impact on the choices that you make.

Try this idea if you are plagued by hard water. Filter the water with a water softener. Magnesium and calcium deposits that cause water hardness are removed from water when a water softener is used. Various kinds of water softeners are available on the market, including those that utilize tablets. It?s up to you to decide which is best suited for your home.

TIP! If you are a do-it-yourselfer, you owe it to yourself to buy only the best tools and supplies. You might pay more to begin with, but it will cost less money over time.

Lampshades with simple designs give no life to the room. Go to your local crafts store, pick up some acrylic paint and stencils, and create designs on your lampshades. Keep in mind this can be done with dye based ink pads as well. You could literally create any design you can think of and give more personality to your home.

TIP! Focus on the front porch if you are thinking about home improvements. This area is the first space that your visitors notice and is often what they use to form their first thoughts about the residence.

To keep the outside of your home looking fresh and clean, add a bright new coat of paint. Nothing effects your home?s curb appeal quite like paint does, and paint also serves as a barrier that will keep your house protected. Choosing the correct color is what will make the home improvement project a success.

TIP! Plan any landscaping to complement your home. Styles that don?t belong together can clash with your home and make it unattractive whereas, a well put together patio and garden can bring the look together.

Doing your own home improvement can be great. However, some home improvement projects need the services of a professional. This can cause internal conflict, as you desire the knowledge to make repairs, while making sure the professionals get the job done. These things are very essential when it comes to remodeling. Be sure to use the tips from this article to begin your project the right way.

Fostering love and support | Rancho Santa Fe

Marsha Sutton

By Marsha Sutton

Overuse of the word ?amazing? to describe events that fall far short of jaw-dropping, shocking or awe-filled (the amazing sale at Nordstrom; that amazing steak dinner; an amazing hair cut) is one of my pet peeves.

But ?amazing? comes close to describing what the organization called Friends of San Pasqual Academy does for the Academy?s foster kids.

Formed in 2003, Friends of San Pasqual Academy was established as a nonprofit 501c3 organization to support the children of SPA. Since then, Friends has grown as word has spread of its heartfelt mission to be a lifeline to the children.

Friends of San Pasqual Academy, based in Rancho Santa Fe, works closely with the school, which opened in 2001 to serve the needs of foster children in the county who have been unable to find permanent homes through adoption.

Governmental agencies responsible for the care and protection of the county?s thousands of foster children have long recognized a critical need for stability in the lives of these youth.

Foster children sometimes attend five or six different high schools by their sophomore year, and suffer from early years defined by poverty, abuse and neglect.

Many children move frequently from one foster home to another, through no fault of their own, some living in up to a dozen different homes. Being continuously uprooted affects academic performance, emotional stability, social skills and dreams for success.

According to the school?s website, many foster youth experience high numbers of home placements, lack fully developed independent living skills, are unable to form lasting relationships with peers and adults, fall behind in academics, leave foster care without earning a high school diploma, and have difficulties finding and keeping jobs. Many end up homeless.

The academic picture is bleak, with studies indicating that 83 percent of foster youth are held back by the third grade, 35 percent are in special education, and as few as 15 percent enroll in college.

It?s difficult for many of us who live securely in warm, stable, loving families to imagine this kind of life, but it?s not so hard to imagine how being a foster child would sap hope, optimism and motivation.

After many years of planning, in 1999 the County of San Diego purchased a 238-acre campus in Escondido in San Pasqual Valley near the Wild Animal Park, with fantastical dreams of renovating the facility and creating a residential school for foster teens.

After two years of modernizations funded through a collaborative public-private-business partnership, fantasy became reality. Doors opened in 2001 and San Pasqual Academy became the first residential education campus for foster youth in the nation.

The facility is licensed to serve up to 184 children, with about 135 students ages 12 to 18 currently attending, all of whom are dependents and under the protection of the San Diego County juvenile court system.

?San Pasqual Academy is a unique program that serves students who have faced challenges many of us can?t even imagine,? said Dr. Randy Ward, County Superintendent of Schools, in an email. ?These kids have come from tough backgrounds but never let that stand in their way.

?They?re fighters, and that includes fighting to catch up academically and excel in school. Thanks to collaboration with and support from community and business partners, we are able to facilitate hope for our students and put them on the path to success.?

Normalcy is the goal

The foster teens, however, need so much more than government agencies can provide. That?s where the remarkable work of the Friends of San Pasqual Academy comes in.

The Friends of San Pasqual Academy assists the foster teens to help them become confident, productive, contributing, educated, successful adults, through donations and resources that improve, empower and enrich the children?s lives.

A holiday party sponsored by Friends Dec. 6 provided for the teens an assembly hall filled to the brim with gifts and a ?shopping? experience of free jeans, shorts, skirts, dresses, T-shirts, shoes, socks, pajamas, hygiene and toiletry products, coffee mugs, books and school supplies.

More than 30 volunteers from Friends helped set up the holiday party, which also featured a cookie decorating station, photo booth, and raffle with very cool prizes.

Donations to the Friends bought for each of the teens an iPod, a specially created San Pasqual flash drive, plush sweatshirts and sturdy book bags emblazoned with the Friends of SPA school logo, and a $100 gift card to spend on themselves.

Donations put to good use? None better.

For those worried about giving money to charitable organizations, not knowing how the money will be spent, donating to Friends reaps visible rewards. The high emotions the teens express for what Friends does is equaled only by how the donors feel when they see the difference their contributions make.

Watching the kids line up outside the door, eager to come in and ?shop,? was in a way anti-climactic. If you expected to see downtrodden children bedraggled and forlorn, you would be disappointed.

These kids are indistinguishable from the middle-class kids we see in our malls and on our streets. They look and sound and dress like our own kids ? which is a good thing.

Normal is the goal, and to make the teens feel good about themselves, loved, wanted and accepted.

They are just kids like our kids ? until you remember who they are and what they?ve been through. And then it makes you cry.

But they are resilient ? perhaps more so than we who gaze upon them with wonder at their courage and fortitude. You make the best of what life hands you, I suppose.

A cake with my name on it

?Holidays are particularly stressful for foster kids, who are constantly reminded of not being able to be in a traditional setting with family members,? said Friends founder and indefatigable leader Joan Scott. ?Abuse, neglect and negative memories have been part of their lives.?

Friends of San Pasqual Academy provides invaluable assistance to help these foster teens overcome their history, embrace normality, and become productive adults.

Besides the annual holiday party, the Friends of San Pasqual Academy also provides many other events and gifts, all to make the special students at this most unique of schools feel supported:

? Shop ?til you drop back-to-school day

? Staff appreciation day

? Spring celebration

? New Year?s Eve party with DJ

? Senior prom

? Graduation brunch and ceremony

? Scholarships for graduates

?Birthday parties and gifts

? sports banquets and awards

? Lettermen?s jackets

? Yearbooks

? Senior portraits

At a celebration honoring the San Pasqual youth a few years back, SPA students expressed their gratitude to donors with words that left many speechless.

One said she had never had a birthday party, and Friends gave her not just a party but presents and a cake ?with my name on it.?

Another said about the Senior Prom that Friends provides: ?I never saw a tuxedo before. We went to a place called the Hotel Del. I had asparagus. I never ate asparagus before.?

San Pasqual, said another, is ?family that doesn?t leave in a week or two.?

Corsage Day by Friends assists students in making corsages for Prom Night. Senior Brunch recognizes the graduating seniors and provides them with basic supplies for college and independent living. Scholarships support graduates in their post-secondary education and career endeavors. And the list goes on and on.

Friends of San Pasqual Academy, led by the enthusiastic and ever-cheerful Joan Scott, is a key component of the support system for these kids, one that provides stability, acceptance, love and guidance.

December is a season of giving, a season of joy, but a season also to remember that not everyone lives as comfortably as we in these affluent communities do.

The dedication of all the partners at the school is impressive. The school?s 95 percent graduation rate is attributed to the hard work and commitment of the teens, the caring staff, and the safe and stable living environment.

But there?s more to it than that for the foster children. There?s knowing that people ? strangers ? care deeply.

The rewards are clearly a two-way street. Through their tireless efforts on behalf of the kids, the supporters of the Friends of San Pasqual Academy find meaning and great satisfaction in their ability to make a real difference in the lives of these children.

The work of the Friends? It?s truly nothing short of amazing.

The San Pasqual Academy story

By Marsha Sutton

San Pasqual Academy is a public, four-year, residential high school for foster children, administered under the direction of the San Diego County Office of Education?s Juvenile Court and Community Schools.

According to the school?s website, SPA is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and all teachers are fully credentialed. Classes are small, with a student-teacher ratio of 15 to 1.

To graduate, students need 220 credits and must complete core requirements in English, mathematics, science, social science, foreign language, physical education, a prescribed number of elective credits, and a senior project. The curriculum is based on California state standards.

Because a major part of adolescent development includes extra-curricular activities, the Academy offers yearbook, drama, clubs, dances, Associated Student Body leadership, Spirit Days, assemblies, and a range of athletic pursuits including football, basketball, softball and volleyball.

The facility calls itself ?a bridge to knowledge, support and hope? for the foster teens. The goal on the website is ?a rigorous academic program, combined with the experiences of a full extra-curricular program.?

?We strive to provide a comprehensive school experience as much as possible, in terms of academics, extracurricular activities and athletics,? said San Diego County Office of Education?s Suzanne Miyasaki, the school?s principal.

The core campus occupies about 50 acres of the expansive 238-acre property and has modern classrooms with computers and technology, a cafeteria, assembly hall, career information center, gymnasium, weight room, health and wellness center, assembly hall, recreation fields and swimming pool.

The residential cottages are considered by some to be the most unique feature of the facility. The spacious family-style homes, which accommodate up to eight youth, offer a common living area, dining area, kitchen, laundry space, youth bedrooms and bathrooms, and a suite for the adult houseparents who live with the kids.

Each teen has a computer, and Internet access is available in the living area. The houseparents have personal space in an adjoining suite, which features a bedroom and bathroom, living room, dining area, and kitchen.

?While each home has basic program rules and regulations to follow, there is flexibility to meet the needs of each youth,? the school?s website states. ?Day-to-day family activities in the home include homework, planning and preparing meals, completing household chores, and participating in family meetings.?

Housing is also provided for SPA alumni, school staff, senior volunteers and community members.

In addition to accepting high school students in grades 9 through 12, San Pasqual Academy also takes younger siblings (no younger than 12) in an effort to keep families together. These middle school siblings attend an Escondido public school until they reach ninth grade and can attend SPA?s high school.

San Pasqual Academy is a diverse campus with a rich blend of cultures. According to the website, approximately 33 percent of the students are Caucasian, 31 percent African-American, 24 percent Hispanic, 1 percent Asian/Pacific Islander, 3 percent Native American, and 8 percent bi-racial.

The invitation for placement at San Pasqual Academy is voluntary but is seldom refused. These are children who have rarely experienced a sense of permanence and stability in their lives. Although the facility does not provide legal permanency, San Pasqual offers them a home, with adults who provide long-term relationships and become their ?family.?

Miyasaki said foster care is similar to special education ?in that you always start with the least restrictive environment.? She said youth are often placed with relatives first (which can be multiple placements), and then perhaps an invested adult such as a family friend, then foster parents (which can be many different homes), and then a group home.

?So San Pasqual is usually is not the first placement,? she said.

The San Diego County Office of Education, which runs the educational side of the residential school (teachers, administration, school equipment, supplies, custodians, teachers? aides, etc.), is one of four groups that collaborate to bring to the foster teens an array of services.

Working with SDCOE are New Alternatives Inc., San Diego Workforce Partnership, and San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. These four agencies provide academic, residential, work readiness and dependency case management programs and services.

Also assisting in the work is the nonprofit San Pasqual Academy Foundation which, under the leadership of Development Liaison Debby Syverson, has received generous donations that have enhanced SPA?s physical site, including renovations of the living units, cafeteria, technology center, gymnasium, and health and wellness center. A capital campaign is currently underway to add family homes on campus to increase the number of youth who can be accommodated.

Helping Hand: Notre Dame athletes aided in tornado relief

From left, Notre Dame track athlete Natalie Geiger and fencers Michael Rossi and Gabriel Acuna help carry a large tree branch to the road in Tuscaloosa in October of 2011. Last Modified: Friday, December 28, 2012 at 10:50 p.m.

TUSCALOOSA ? David Jones saw the best of Alabama?s community in the worst of times.

Jones, a Notre Dame cheerleader, was part of a group of two dozen Fighting Irish athletes that came to Tuscaloosa during fall break in 2011. They were there for a week of cleanup and hard work in a grieving town where more than 50 were left dead because of a tornado a few months earlier.

Now, a year and a half after that week of bonding and goodwill, Notre Dame and Alabama are getting ready to play each other for the BCS national championship.

?With the hospitality I had down in Alabama, it became one of my favorite schools,? Jones said. ?There?s no hostility, but more karma. You meet all these different faces of the Alabama community. You?re just amazed by them and now you?re playing them.?

There were no football players during that weeklong service project dubbed ?Fight for Tide.? They were preparing for the 2011 season, after all.

It wasn?t about football, anyway. Or basketball. Or softball.

The service project began with a call from Tim Cavanaugh, assistant director of Alabama?s ticket office, to Notre Dame program coordinator Sarah Smith seeking donations. The two interned together in South Bend.

That call resulted in clothes shipped to Tuscaloosa, and ultimately the 675-mile bus ride and weeklong trip.

?It?s one of those things that when special things arise we try to do something if we have the resources and the interest from the student-athletes,? said Smith, adding that a group had traveled to New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. ?It all just kind of came together for the Alabama trip. A lot of kids were talking about it. We sent a bunch of clothes down there but then the conversation kind of snowballed to, Why don?t we go down there??

Other schools? students and fans also offered a hand in Tuscaloosa, including those who pull for Auburn.

Tragedy trumps rivalry any day.

?I think it speaks volumes for the kind of character and leadership that those people have, from whatever schools they come from,? Tide football coach Nick Saban said. ?People came here from Auburn, which we appreciated. They came from Kent State. I think a willingness to serve other people who are in need at the time for whatever reasons, I think speaks volumes for what kind of person somebody really is. We certainly appreciate that and certainly appreciate anything the Notre Dame students did for our community.?

The Notre Dame group cleared out lots, hauled debris and dug a ditch. There was also lots of listening.

?Everyone had a story: Where they were, who in their family was affected,? Smith said. ?I think it was kind of healing for them to tell their story to other people and that we were down there showing that we cared.

?It kind of created this bond between us and everyone we met, this kind of appreciation that we were there in solidarity. That was pretty cool to feel.?

Tide softball coach Patrick Murphy and some of his players worked with the Notre Dame athletes on a site a few miles from campus in Alberta City and took them to dinner.

?I think they made a lot of fans in Tuscaloosa because that night when we went to eat, there were several people that came up to me and asked what was going on,? Murphy said. ?I said, ?This is a group of Notre Dame student-athletes.? And people gave me a look like, ?Notre Dame??

?I can remember reading in the newspaper people wrote and said that, ?Our opinion of Notre Dame has changed tremendously.? Just a wonderful gesture by these student-athletes. All of us were really touched by it.?

Alabama athletic director Mal Moore, a former Notre Dame assistant football coach, asked to meet with the group from South Bend. He gathered them at midfield in Bryant-Denny Stadium during a stadium tour.

?I told them about my days at Notre Dame and how much I loved my time there ... and how much it meant to me personally that they chose to come here to support Tuscaloosa and the university community after the tragic tornado came through,? Moore said Friday. ?I thanked them for that, and we had a good visit, made a bunch of pictures and had a good time. It was very inspiring to me that they chose to come down and give several days of their time to the community here.?

Smith, meanwhile, said she was taken aback by the southern hospitality. They got a few cultural lessons on things like the meaning of ?Roll Tide? and the houndstooth gear popularized by iconic Tide coach Bear Bryant.

?It was just so cool to share some time together,? Smith said. ?I definitely have a soft spot for Alabama.

?Any time humans are being kind and caring for one another and have that kind of spirit of hospitality, how can you not respect that??

Bolivia expropriates Spanish energy subsidiaries

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) ? President Evo Morales nationalized the Bolivian electricity distribution subsidiaries of the Spanish energy company Iberdrola in a public ceremony Saturday.

Morales issued a decree allowing the takeover of shares in Empresa de Electricidad de La Paz (Electropaz) and Empresa de Luz y Fuerza de Oruro (Elfeo), which supply energy in this Andean nation.

Soldiers guarded the installations of the electricity distribution companies, marked with signs reading: "Nationalized."

In the ceremony at Bolivia's government palace, Morales also announced the expropriation of an investment management company and a service provider belonging to the Spanish energy giant.

Morales said he had "been forced to take this step" to ensure that electric service rates remain "equitable" in the regions of La Paz and Oruro.

The Spanish government said in a statement that it regretted Bolivia's decision to nationalize companies that included "Spanish, Argentine and American companies among its shareholders."

Spain said it hoped "the process of assessing the value of the nationalized company is done with high standards of objectivity that would establish the just compensation to which shareholders are entitled."

Telephone calls and emails seeking comment from Iberdrola in Spain were not immediately answered.

The decree read by Morales calls for Iberdrola to receive indemnification after an independent firm is hired within 180 days to determine the value of the nationalized shares.

Morales in May also nationalized Transportadora de Electricidad belonging to Spanish company Red Electrica, which controlled 74 percent of energy transmission in Bolivia.

In his first year in office in 2006, the Bolivian president nationalized the oil industry through a renegotiation of contracts with a dozen oil companies, including Repsol, Petrobras, BG and Total.

In 2009 Morales transferred to state control the country's largest telephone operator, which had been controlled by Italy's ETI, and in 2010 he did the same with the four largest power generators, which had belonged to French-owned Suez, Rurelec of Britain and Bolivian shareholders.

Texas gas prices increase 4 cents

HOUSTON (AP) -- The average price across Texas for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline increased 4 cents this week.

AAA Texas reported Thursday the average price increased to $3.07. Motorists in Texarkana are paying the most, with an average of $3.12 per gallon. Drivers in Beaumont are paying the least at $3.02 per gallon.

The average price for fuel in Texas is 19 cents less than the national average of $3.26.

AAA Texas says gas prices may be impacted by what happens regarding the "fiscal cliff" ? budget cuts and tax hikes that would kick in on Jan. 1 unless the White House and Congress agree on a budget deal. The group says a deal will likely been seen as an economic positive, sending prices higher, while no deal could lower prices.

2012 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid [w/video] Review

With its subtle badging out of sight, and from a distance greater than 30 feet, Volkswagen's flagship Touareg Hybrid can hardly be differentiated from its entry-level Touareg V6 sibling. But pop the hood or take it for a quick spin, and the gasoline-electric utility quickly reveals itself as one of the most complex vehicles ever to grace the German automaker's showroom.

Predictably, there is always downside to such technical wizardry. Comprehensive development and revolutionary components, including a large nickel metal-hydride battery pack, don't come cheap. As a result, the Touareg Hybrid is the most expensive vehicle in today's Volkswagen lineup, with a base price eclipsing the standard Audi Q7, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz M-Class and even the Porsche Cayenne.

So why would someone spend more than $60,000 to put this particular Volkswagen in his or her driveway? To answer that question and to learn more about the automaker's flagship softroader, we spent a full week with it.

Volkswagen's Touareg Hybrid is one very complicated machine. To best understand it, one needs to back up a few years and take into account Volkswagen's ongoing relationship with Porsche. Before both became siblings under the umbrella of the VW Group, the two were working together to develop a hybrid on their shared first-generation SUV/crossover platform (sold as the VW Touareg, Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7). Early gasoline-electric prototypes emerged in early 2009, and we were fortunate enough to get seat time in Porsche's Cayenne Hybrid prototype in March of that same year. Consumers, however, weren't allowed behind the wheel of a production Touareg Hybrid until the 2011 model year when the SUV rolled into showrooms on a shared second-generation platform (Porsche rolled out its mechanically identical Cayenne Hybrid around the same time).

Volkswagen has positioned its new Hybrid at the top of its food chain.

Volkswagen has positioned its new Hybrid at the top of its food chain ? a flagship of technology and innovation ? with a base price for the 2012 Touareg Hybrid of $62,865 (including a $870 destination fee). That figure not only makes it Volkswagen's most expensive offering today (the W8-powered Phaeton sedan's last year was 2006, and it departed with a base price of $68,655), it slots well above the base price of the standard naturally aspirated Touareg V6 ($44,245) and Touareg TDI ($47,745) models.

The sticker is a bit easier to swallow when consumers realize that the Hybrid arrives loaded with just about everything as standard equipment. The upgrades over lesser Touaregs include Vienna leather upholstery, walnut trim, 12-way power seats, an eight-inch touchscreen navigation system, Bluetooth audio and smartphone connectivity, panoramic moonroof, keyless access and start, 19-inch alloy wheels and much more. This loaded Touareg Hybrid is effectively a halo model for the Volkswagen nameplate, and its low volume (less than five percent of sales) ensures its exclusivity. For lack of a better comparison, consider it today's version of the discontinued (yet memorably awesome) Touareg V10 TDI.

Volkswagen touts its Touareg Hybrid as the world's first gasoline-electric hybrid with a forced induction engine. As such, combustion power comes in the form of a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 generating 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque (it's the same basic engine found under the hood of the Audi S4 and several other models). Supplementing the gasoline engine is a 47-horsepower electric motor, pulling its energy from a 288-volt nickel metal-hydride battery pack fitted beneath the luggage compartment (the battery consists of 240 individual cells and offers an energy density of 1.7kWh).

Volkswagen touts its Touareg Hybrid as the world's first gasoline-electric hybrid with a forced induction engine.

Things get much more innovative at this point, as the standard eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission is separated from the engine by a decoupling clutch ? electronics are able to completely sever the ties between the engine and transmission on demand, thereby allowing the Touareg Hybrid to "coast" (glide free of engine drag) to improve efficiency. Lastly, Volkswagen's 4Motion permanent all-wheel-drive system, with a limited-slip Torsen differential, sends the power to all four wheels with a standard torque split of 40:60 (front:rear) on dry pavement.

The Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid's curb weight is a hefty 5,135 pounds, but the combined power rating of the system provides an impressive 380 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain does its best to negate the mass. Pedal to the carpet, the five-passenger utility will hit 60 miles per hour in just over six seconds flat with very little drama, making it VW's quickest Touareg, quicker even than the aforementioned V10 TDI model.

But the Touareg Hybrid isn't just a new powertrain shoehorned into an internal combustion chassis. Volkswagen has enhanced the brakes to accommodate this model's additional weight and power. The stoppers are upgraded with six-piston monobloc calipers in the front (14.2-inch rotors), and the rear wears four-piston monobloc calipers (13.0-inch rotors). The suspension, with fixed damping and a single ride height, features upper and lower control arms with coil springs up front and a multilink design with coil springs in the rear. Nineteen-inch alloy wheels wear 265/50R19 all-season tires at all four corners.

We found its hybrid mannerisms predictable, its talent and poise commendable, but its fuel economy less than impressive.

Based on the week we spent with Volkswagen's largest hybrid, we found its hybrid mannerisms predictable, its talent and poise commendable, but its fuel economy less than impressive.

The Hybrid boots up almost silently after a press of the start/stop button (one may also insert the key into a redundant slot in the traditional fob slot). As the electric motor and combustion engine are able to run both independently or together this Touareg will choose pure electric mode (EV) if hard acceleration is not called for and the battery pack is sufficiently charged. Volkswagen says the Touareg Hybrid is capable of cruising at up to 30 mph in EV mode, though we had trouble keeping the gasoline-fed V6 from firing up with even light pressure on the accelerator.

Like its standard non-hybrid siblings, the Touareg's mid-size five-passenger cabin is very comfortable. The all-black upholstery and black dash in our tester was a bit dour and ominous looking, but the lighter wood and splashes of bright aluminum offered a welcome contrast. Adults found the second row comfortable with air vents in the center console, and the cargo area is cavernous and easy to load (kudos to VW for putting a metal scuff plate at the top of the bumper).

Forgetting the fuel economy issue and punching the throttle really brings the Hybrid to life.

Cruising sedately on the highway was a no-brainer, but almost boring, as this Volkswagen has an underlying sporty demeanor. Forgetting the fuel economy issue and punching the throttle really brings the Hybrid to life. The torque of the combined system is very strong, with a very linear power delivery. We applaud VW Group for sticking with a traditional torque converter automatic gearbox with its hybrid, as it cracks off firm shifts with a nice solid feel that no continuously variable transmission will ever be able to match. Without question, we found the Hybrid fun to drive.

Like other hybrids, the Touareg Hybrid utilizes regenerative braking to recover energy back into its batteries. We didn't feel the heavy drag common to many other gasoline-electrics under deceleration. The VW also features a standard start-stop system, to conserve fuel while at a red light or stopped for more than a few seconds.

Unlike other hybrids (with the exception being its near-twin Cayenne Hybrid), the Touareg Hybrid is able to electronically disengage its transmission from the engine when the throttle is lifted at higher speeds. This special "coasting" mode works brilliantly and without any operator input (the only way the driver knows it's working is by keeping a close eye on the tachometer as it drops to zero).

Most consumers would be hard-pressed to realize that they are driving a hybrid.

Along those lines, most consumers would be hard-pressed to realize that they are driving a hybrid. Most of our passengers couldn't tell the difference from the second row (of course, anyone behind the wheel would have to overlook the bright green "READY" script in the center of the primary instrument cluster). The soundtrack from the supercharged V6 is also pleasant.

Overall, the ride is firm but still very comfortable. Body roll is minimal, with the all-season tires being the Touareg's Achilles Heel. The Porsche Cayenne Hybrid is understandably meant to be the more athletic sibling of the two.

Braking is also very strong, thanks to the massive rotors and strong calipers. Unfortunately, and this is another issue common to all hybrids, there is a small feeling of disconnect introduced by the regenerative braking system. We wouldn't say the brakes felt weak or untrustworthy, but there is a millisecond between pedal application and the firm braking feel we have grown accustomed to in other VW products. On the other hand, the variable-ratio electric power steering felt good whether tracking straight on the highway, negotiating city streets or maneuvering in a parking lot.

The Touareg is more of a speed demon than a frugal pacifist.

Despite the fashionable blue and chrome "HYBRID" badging on the rear decklid that telegraph miserly fuel consumption, we found the Touareg more of a speed demon than a frugal pacifist. Its EPA fuel economy rating is 20 city / 24 highway, and we averaged just over 18 mpg overall during our week. Compare that to the standard V6 (16 city / 23 highway) and the TDI (19 city / 28 highway) and the hybrid advantage is slight, if any. In fact, we suspect that the oil-burning TDI model ? our hands-down favorite in Volkswagen's Touareg lineup ? will very likely consume less fuel overall and offer much greater highway range. Plus, it stands to accomplish both with far less complexity.

After seven full days, we found ourselves impressed with the 2012 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid. The more we learned about it, the easier it became to marvel at the technology concealed beneath its steel skin. This VW is much more than a solid unibody platform containing a comfortable five-place interior. It's a low volume flagship with a unique powertrain developed with Porsche and sold as a halo vehicle. Its objective is not to be our favorite Volkswagen, but to be the most avant-garde and innovative model in the company's portfolio. And with that as its objective, it succeeds.
