The one thing about life that is certain is its unpredictability. Nothing stays the same forever. Every day we are bombarded with new stimuli, new challenges and new events.

For some of us, unpredictability creates a state of panic; it keeps us up at night and distracts us from enjoying the world around us. People like being in control of their social world and vulnerability is seen as a sign of weakness.

Uncertainty is so abhorred that Berger and Calabrese (1975) proposed the uncertainty reduction theory. The theory asserts that the anxiety created by uncertainty of the social world motivates people to reduce and avoid uncertainty.

So how can we better navigate around life?s inevitable detours?

Most of us are taught the importance of planning, being highly structured and organized. We have at our disposal copious technological devices designed to ensure that we stay on the right track within the right time frame. While spontaneity remains the spice of life, we relish existing within the confines of predictability (a safe and comfortable environment). Life, however, takes its own twists and turns, and for good reason. If it did not, we would quickly get bored.

I once encountered a woman suffering from severe depression. In her early 30s, she stated that her life is nothing like she imagined it would be. She revealed all her expected dreams and aspirations in a wonderfully detailed timeline. However, she despaired over all the obstacles, setbacks and wrong turns she had taken that have ?prevented? her from achieving her dreams.

I asked her ?if you were driving to town, and there was a roadblock, what would you do? Would you stay at the roadblock until the road was repaired, then proceed to drive to your destination?? With a confused expression she vehemently stated that she would have done the most sensible thing: ?Find another route.?

It is easy to become discouraged when things do not go according to plan. We all want things to turn out perfectly. But, just as we won?t sit by a roadblock waiting for the road to open, we should not sit at life?s roadblocks and despair about how difficult or unfair life is. There is always more than one way to get from point A to point B.

Erikson speaks about this in the last stage of his psychosocial theory of development. When we look back at our life, how are we going to see it? We have two options: We can anguish over all the obstacles and roadblocks that came our way, or we can enjoy the scenery of different routes, take pictures along the way, meet new people, develop new skills and practice acceptance.

How can we challenge ourselves to enjoy the scenery of a detour?

1. Be flexible.Make plans but do not ever cast them in stone. Leave room for life?s curveballs. From an evolutionary perspective we are designed to be able to adapt. Use this to your full advantage.
2. Increase coping skills.Consciously engage in activities that increase your ability to cope with uncertainty, e.g. finding humor in situations.
3. Determine the controllable vs. uncontrollable events.Do not ruminate on events that are beyond your control. Focus instead on the events in your life that you can control and practice acceptance of those that you cannot.
4. Meditate. The positive benefits of meditation cannot be overestimated. Meditation can create a state of calm and equanimity, decreasing your chances of experiencing panic in response to a detour.

Following weeks of bitter partisan fighting over Mr. Hagel?s nomination for the Pentagon post, he won Senate confirmation with surprising ease, passing a key Tuesday cloture vote by 71 to 27. Among those voting ?yea? were Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and John McCain of Arizona ? two lawmakers who?d battered Hagel, a former GOP senator from Nebraska, over his past statements on Israel, Iran, Libya, and various other national security issues.

The final vote on Hagel's confirmation came Tuesday evening, with the Senate voting 58 to 41. Four Republicans backed Hagel, but Graham and McCain voted "no."

So what did the GOP opposition to Hagel produce? If nothing else, it?s likely to prevent the administration from pointing to Hagel as evidence that President Obama?s Cabinet is bipartisan. It?s possible that was one reason Obama chose Hagel in the first place, but the fierce GOP opposition to his nomination made clear that his former colleagues consider him a turncoat due to his criticism of the Bush-era troop surge in Iraq, and other issues. Democrat John Kerry?s path to confirmation as secretary of State was all flowers and lollipops by comparison.

And Hagel emerges politically weaker. His fumbling answers during his Senate Armed Services Committee confirmation hearing surely caught the notice of all the high-ranking generals and admirals he?ll be dealing with. To them, he?ll have to prove he?s got the stuff to handle a very tough job at a time when sequester cuts are about to whack their budgets. Plus, he?ll have to come back and appear before the very same Armed Services panel for further budget and authorization hearings.

?Hagel has been stripped of the patina of competence and will go into his job with zero credibility even on his own side,? wrote Washington Post "Right Turn" blogger Jennifer Rubin, who?s helped lead the rhetorical charge against Hagel?s nomination.

But the fact is the Republican opposition lost. Hagel gets the big paneled office on the Pentagon?s outside E ring. And the opposition lost because in the end it was not cohesive. Some lawmakers truly wished to prevent Hagel from getting the job, and appeared willing to go to the barricades to that end. Others did not want to continue what was in essence a filibuster of the nomination.

Eighteen Republicans voted for cloture. If 12 of these GOP Senators had gone the other way Hagel would have been blocked and remained in nominee limbo, short of the 60 votes needed to proceed to a final, majority-rules vote on the nomination.

McCain, for instance, voted for cloture despite having called Hagel ?unqualified? for the Senate post.

?Hard to overstate the courage of the Senate Republicans who delayed Chuck Hagel?s confirmation by a few days. Think Thermopylae,? tweeted National Review Online news editor Daniel Foster, sarcastically.

McCain and others weren?t willing to continue to block Hagel in large part because the Senate has traditionally given presidents deference in regards to picking cabinet members. No secretary of Defense nominee has ever previously been filibustered. Now that Hagel has been semi-kind-of-filibustered, will that precedent continue to hold? The next Republican president will have to get his picks past Democratic senators, after all. In that sense the cabinet confirmation battles may be just beginning.

Voter ID laws in the balance as court considers Voting Rights Act

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court hears arguments over whether a key part of the Voting Rights Act?a cornerstone of the civil rights movement?is unfairly targeting southern states for systematic racial bias that no longer exists.

The court's decision on the law, which helped dismantle decades of discriminatory voting restrictions in the South, could hand a victory to the recent conservative-led movement to tighten identification requirements and limit early voting hours at the ballot box. A wave of such laws swept 30 states over the last few years.

Supporters say these laws were designed to combat voter fraud. But they have attracted lawsuits from civil rights groups and the federal government, who argue that the laws disenfranchise minority citizens, who are less likely than white voters to have photo ID. (The Brennan Center estimates that about 11 percent of voting age citizens do not have a government issued photo ID.) The laws also sparked a political argument, with some Democrats accusing Republicans of pushing voter ID laws because they affected constituencies that tended to vote Democrat.

Some of these state photo ID laws in the South have been aggressively fended off by the Justice Department, which argued that states covered by the 1965 Voting Rights Act cannot change election law in this way because it disadvantages minority voters. Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, reauthorized by Congress in 2006, gives the federal government the ability to preemptively reject changes to election law in states and counties that have a history of discriminating against minority voters. The law covers nine states and portions of seven more.

The Justice Department used Section 5 of the law to block voter ID laws in Texas and South Carolina last year, and also struck down early voting restrictions in five counties in Florida. (Minority voters are more likely than white voters to vote early in person.)

Justices in the conservative wing of the Supreme Court, including Chief Justice John Roberts, have expressed reservations that the nine Southern states covered by the law still require the same degree of federal oversight that they did 60 years ago. "Voter turnout and registration rates [between blacks and whites] now approach parity," Roberts wrote in a decision in 2009. "Blatantly discriminatory evasions of federal decrees are rare. And minority candidates hold office at unprecedented levels."

Another argument against Section 5's constitutionality is that it's unclear whether minority voters in Southern states are more likely to face discrimination at the polls than they are in other states. Voter ID laws, for example, have passed in states such as Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Indiana. Since those states do not have a history of voter discrimination?and are not covered by the act?their voter ID laws did not have to first pass federal inspection. That said, southern states covered under the act were much more likely to pass a voter ID law than other states. Seven of the nine states covered in full under the act adopted such a law, compared to 19 states overall.

If Roberts and at least four other justices decide to strike down the part of the law that singles out the southern states, civil rights advocates will have few places to go in challenging voter ID laws. The Supreme Court upheld Indiana's photo ID law in 2008, suggesting that without Section 5, voter ID laws will prevail in the courts.

Rick Hasen, an expert on voting law at the University of California at Irvine, said it would be "tough" to win a case against a voter ID law without Section 5.

Wendy Weiser of the non-profit Brennan Center, which has challenged some voter ID laws as discriminatory, says Section 5 is a "potent tool" against the laws. "It's a much heavier litigation burden," without Section 5, she said.

Illegal music file-sharing down 'significantly'

Illegal music file-sharing "declined significantly," down by 17 percent in 2012 compared to 2011, according to The NPD Group.

With more services available, such as Spotify, Last.fm and Pandora for streaming and buying music, and giant digital music retailers like Amazon and Apple, consumers have more choices than ever for getting music legally, easily and relatively cheaply.

"For the music industry, which has been battling digital piracy for over a decade, last year was a year of progress," said Russ Crupnick, NPD's senior vice president of industry analysis, in a statement about the research group's findings, part of its "Annual Music Study 2012" report.

NPD's findings come on the heels of a recent report that says music sales actually saw a small gain, 0.3 percent, in 2012 to $16.5 billion, the industry's first revenue increase in 13 years, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.

Meanwhile, a new, U.S.-based Copyright Alert System is kicking in this week to target consumers who use peer-to-peer software to illegally share music, as well as movies and TV shows. The alert system will be used by five major Internet service providers to notify a customer whose Internet address has been detected sharing files illegally.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing peaked in 2005, NPD said, when about 20 percent of Internet users ages 13 and older used P2P services, such as LimeWire (now shut down), to download music. In 2012, "that number fell to 11 percent."

P2P services are still out there, of course. But The NPD Group notes that the volume of illegally downloaded music files from P2P sites "also declined 26 percent, compared to the previous year."

Also down: the "number of music files being burned and ripped from CDs owned by friends and family fell 44 percent, the number of files swapped from hard drives dropped 25 percent, and the volume of music downloads from digital lockers decreased 28 percent."

The NPD Group says the main reason for the reduced sharing is the "increased use of free, legal music streaming services. In fact nearly half of those who stopped or curtailed file sharing cited the use of streaming services as their primary reason for stopping or reducing their file-sharing activity."

"In recent years, we?ve seen less P2P activity, because the music industry has successfully used litigation to shut down Limewire and other services," said Crupnick. "Many of those who continued to use P2P services reported poor experiences, due to rampant spyware and viruses on illegal P2P sites."

NPD's research was based on 5,406 completed online surveys in the U.S., a spokesman told NBC News. The survey was done between Dec. 12, 2012 and Jan. 9, 2013.

Lab instruments inside Curiosity eat Mars rock powder

Feb. 25, 2013 ? Two compact laboratories inside NASA's Mars rover Curiosity have ingested portions of the first sample of rock powder ever collected from the interior of a rock on Mars.

Curiosity science team members will use the laboratories to analyze the rock powder in the coming days and weeks.

The rover's Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) and Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instruments received portions of the sample on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22 and 23, respectively, and began inspecting the powder.

"Data from the instruments have confirmed the deliveries," said Curiosity Mission Manager Jennifer Trosper of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.

The powder comes from Curiosity drilling into rock target "John Klein" on Feb. 8. One or more additional portions from the same initial sample may be delivered to the instruments as analysis proceeds.

During a two-year prime mission, researchers are using Curiosity's 10 science instruments to assess whether the study area in Gale Crater on Mars ever has offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life.

Scientists find bone-marrow environment that helps produce infection-fighting T and B cells

Feb. 24, 2013 ? The Children's Medical Center Research Institute at UT Southwestern has deepened the understanding of the environment within bone marrow that nurtures stem cells, this time identifying the biological setting for specialized blood-forming cells that produce the infection-fighting white blood cells known as T cells and B cells.

The research found that cells called early lymphoid progenitors, which are responsible for producing T cells and B cells, thrive in an environment known as an osteoblastic niche. The investigation, published online February 24 in Nature and led by Dr. Sean Morrison, also establishes a promising approach for scientists to map the entire blood-forming system.

Scientists already know how to manufacture large quantities of stem cells that give rise to the nervous system, skin, and other tissues. But they have been unable to make blood-forming stem cells in a laboratory, in part because of a lack of understanding about the niche in which blood-forming stem cells and other progenitor cells reside in the body.

"We believe this research moves us one step closer toward the development of cell therapies in the blood-forming system that don't exist today," said Dr. Morrison, Director of the Institute and Professor of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center. "In understanding the environments for blood-forming stem cells and those of different kinds of progenitor cells, we can work toward reproducing those environments in the lab and growing cells that can be transplanted to treat a host of medical conditions."

These findings eventually may help increase the safety and effectiveness of bone-marrow transplants, such as those needed after healthy marrow is destroyed by radiation or chemotherapy treatments for childhood leukemia, Dr. Morrison said. The findings also may have implications for treating illnesses associated with loss of infection-fighting cells, such as HIV and severe combined immunodeficiency disease, better known as bubble boy disease.

The Nature study augments earlier work by Dr. Morrison and his team that showed endothelial cells and perivascular cells lining the blood vessels in the bone marrow create the environment that maintains haematopoietic stem cells, which produce billions of new blood cells every day. The latest study shows that bone-forming cells create the environment that maintains early lymphoid progenitors.

"Our research documents that there are different niches, or microenvironments, for blood-forming stem cells and restricted progenitors in the bone marrow," Dr. Morrison said. "One way that bone marrow makes different kinds of blood-forming cells is by compartmentalizing them into different neighborhoods within the marrow."

The researchers identified niches for stem cells and early lymphoid progenitors by determining which cells are the sources of a growth factor (CXCL12) necessary for the proliferation of those two populations of blood-forming cells. By taking the same approach for other growth factors in the bone marrow, researchers should be able to map the niches for every kind of blood-forming progenitor cell in the bone marrow, Dr. Morrison said.

The UTSW paper's first author is Dr. Lei Ding, a former postdoctoral research fellow at the Children's Research Institute and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) at UT Southwestern. Dr. Ding is now an assistant professor at Columbia University.

Research support came from the HHMI and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

President to talk 'sequester' at meeting with governors

President Barack Obama on Monday is expected to implore the nation's governors to put pressure on Congress to avoid the sequester as Obama speaks to the nation's governors at the White House.

Members of the Obama administration, heads of federal agencies and others have been issuing severe warnings to Congress regarding the sequester-- $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts that will go into effect March 1 absent a budget. Warnings have been released threatening fewer responders to handle wildfires, reduced food safety inspection, less help for vulnerable Americans and on Friday, widespread flight delays and cancellations.

"Travelers should expect delays. Flights to major cities like New York, Chicago, San Francisco and others could experience delays up to 90 minutes during peak hours, because we have fewer controllers on staff. Delays in these major airports will ripple across the country," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told reporters at Friday's White House press briefing after announcing that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) plans massive furloughs and closing air traffic control towers if the sequester goes into effect.

The White House on Sunday night released state-by-state reports detailing what they say would be "devastating" impacts on each state as a result of the sequester, but the topic of the sequester was notably absent from Obama's speech Sunday night to the governors, who are in town for the National Governors Association's (NGA) annual winter meeting.

Instead, the president at the White House dinner struck an appreciative tone, commending the governors for steering their states through tough times.

Democratic Gov. Jack Markell of Delaware, chair of the NGA, followed Obama's address Sunday night by emphasizing the absence of politics from the night's celebration. "On this one night it?s a relief -- politics doesn?t drive the conversation. We don?t speak of partisan issues or presidential aspirations," Markell said.

But Markell did note the sequester.

"One thing for sure is certain -- you don?t let issues fester. You get to deal with education and health care, and even the sequester," Markell said to laughter and applause from the audience.

Republicans such as Speaker John Boehner have publicly stated their opposition to the sequester, though others have threatened they are willing to let it go into effect.

Some Republicans over the weekend continued to accuse the administration of exaggerating the sequester's impact.

"They have plenty of flexibility in terms of discretion on how they spend money. There are easy ways to cut this money that the American people will never feel," Republican Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma said on Fox News Sunday.

The president is slated to address the governors at 11:05 a.m. ET from the White House State Dining Room. Vice President Joe Biden, First Lady Michelle Obama and Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden are also scheduled to speak.

New 'Traffic Light System' Set Up By Mexican Church to Warn of Killings Occurring Outside

St Teresa of Avila Church in Monterrey, which is one of Mexico's wealthiest cities, has adopted the system after a spate of shootouts and armed robberies beset the city, the Daily Mail reports.

During mass, a green light is activated from the top of a side door of the church, which means there is no presence of danger on the streets outside, the paper added.

When the red light is lit, it means that someone is being shot outside, whereas the amber light indicates caution.

As another security measure, the church has constructed a concrete wall in front of its main facade.

Posters and notices of missing or kidnapped people are hung inside the church, the paper added.

Biologists with the University of Nevada, Reno say they're finding a growing number of giant goldfish in the lake.

While officials have been working for years in trying to keep the lake's water crystal clear, researcher Sudeep Chandra told KCRA-TV (http://bit.ly/Yo0lIn?) the discovery of the goldfish is particularly worrisome because goldfish eat a lot and excrete "lots of nutrients."

Those nutrients stimulate algae growth.

The goldfish, some of which have grown to 18 inches, could also eat smaller fish, creating new competition for native trout.

Chandra says with no prior studies on goldfish for guidance, researchers are catching the giant goldfish and bringing them back to their lab to study.

It's not clear how the goldfish got into Lake Tahoe, but it's believed to be from people dumping aquariums into the lake.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo angry at media's treatment of Derrick Nix

East Lansing ? Another day had passed since the most analyzed shot to the midsection in the history of college basketball, and it was still a topic around Michigan State's practice facility Thursday.

Derrick Nix chose not to address the incident, replays of which first seemed to indicate he struck Indiana's Cody Zeller below the belt during Tuesday's game. Later on, different angles were shown that made it seem Zeller was the true culprit.

After a day's worth of what seemed like endless debate, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo felt his senior center was portrayed in a negative light, and he didn't like it one bit.

"I really don't appreciate my guy getting conveyed (the way) some have done," Izzo said after practice Thursday. "And I say it's a non-issue. There's videotape out there that made it go one way early on, and there's a ton of it that has changed that 100 percent. You watch it, you view it. But I didn't appreciate the way it was handled."

Nix was criticized harshly on the ESPN broadcast by Dick Vitale, who tempered that criticism Wednesday after seeing more video. However, he still said it was hard to believe Zeller initiated the contact.

For Izzo, the treatment was unfair for a player that has had his share of issues in his time at Michigan State, including last week when he referenced Indiana and Michigan players while saying players at Michigan State don't get the same notoriety.

"For Derrick, I think he's been through enough," Izzo said. "We all talk about the newspaper article (last week), he didn't rip anybody there, he just tried to talk about his players and use other things as examples. There's been no, again, my favorite phrase, there's been no 7-Eleven's robbed, there's been nothing done. He's done nothing that my own son I wouldn't want him to do.

"But I have no ill feelings for him or for guys at Indiana or anything else. I just think as usual, things were portrayed one way. And as film got watched, it changed. So remember this now for you guys, too. Once it's said one way, there's no coming back on it, and I don't think he deserved that.

"So I've ripped him, I've pushed him, I've talked to him over the years, and I'm sticking up for him. And that's the way it's gonna be."

Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis also was disappointed in the wake of the incident.

"It was a great college basketball game, take nothing away from that," he said. "It is very sad, however, that a moment during the game created immediate and harsh comment and generated continued dialogue the way it has. As a result, I watched many different angles and variations of video from the game. I can state with confidence that Derrick played the game the way it is supposed to be played and game officials handled the situation in an appropriate manner. There should be no perception that Derrick plays the game any way other than with a spirit of good sportsmanship and effort."

Injury update

Heading into Sunday's game at Ohio State, the Spartans' health is getting better but is far from 100 percent.

Izzo said Wednesday that Gary Harris had his left shoulder pop out again against Indiana. It happened early in the second half but Harris never came out of the game. Izzo said Harris was fine Thursday, as was Branden Dawson, who has struggled since taking a shot to the face against Michigan.

Guard Travis Trice was also back at practice after returning to action against Indiana. He wore ear plugs as he continues to recover from concussion-like symptoms.

"Travis has got ear plugs in and I think it's just a good excuse to keep me off his back but maybe it's for noise," Izzo joked. "He seems to be a lot better, he's not getting as tired, he's making a read or two in practice today, I think that's a big positive for us."

Canada ambassador says he feels slighted by 'Argo'

TORONTO (AP) -- Canada's former ambassador in Iran, who protected Americans at great personal risk during the Iran hostage crisis of 1979, says if "Argo" wins the Oscar for best picture on Sunday there would be something wrong with director Ben Affleck if he didn't mention Canada.

Ken Taylor said Friday he continues to feel slighted by a movie that he says makes Canada look like a meek observer to CIA heroics in the rescue of six U.S. citizens caught in the crisis. He says there would be no movie if the Canadian embassy didn't take in the Americans.

Taylor says if Affleck doesn't say something in his acceptance speech "then it's a further reflection" on him.

Affleck's CIA thriller "Argo" is widely expected to take home the best-picture trophy on Sunday.

The five men are not her brothers. But that?s what she calls them.

The five initials are not for her children. But many who spot her non-sleeved left arm ask if the tight stack of black letters represents her kids. The question bothers her.

From the top of her booming bicep ? where ?M.G. 27 JAN 07? is positioned ? to the bottom of the bulge ? where ?B.E.? rests ? Army Reserve Drill Sgt. Victoria Parker?s limb permanently honors the five fellow soldiers in her unit who were killed in Iraq during her second deployment there. Images of those those tattoos also went on display Tuesday as part of ?Vet Ink,? an exhibit at the Clark County Historical Museum in Vancouver, Wash.

?The motto is: ?Always remember, never forgot.? I told them I would always remember them. And by putting it on my arm, I remember them every day. I think about them every day,? said Parker, 27, who lives in Vancouver. Her largest, accompanying tattoo depicts the ?fallen soldier battle cross? ? a helmet poised on a standing rifle placed inside empty, unlaced boots. That was inked from a photo she snapped of the memorial shrine set up for Army Sgt. Blair Emery (?B.E.?), killed in a roadside bomb attack?in 2007 in Taji, just north of Baghdad.

?The tattoos helped me cope and move on and still honor their memories,? Parker said. ?It?s no longer painful.?

?Vet Ink? is the brainchild of Susan Tissot, executive director of the museum, located in a city rich with Army roots. Before the Civil War, then-Capt. Ulysses S. Grant was quartermaster at the Columbia Army Barracks in that town. Vancouver has also served as home to part of the 104th?Infantry Division.

?The Army is very prevalent in everything we do ? there are a lot of veterans here, a lot of Army personnel and our former mayor was a colonel in the Army. My father-in-law is a retired Naval officer,? Tissot said. ?It?s a very personal exhibit.

?I knew the tattoos told a story," she added. "It?s a very touching story."?

?Vet Ink? spans military members who served from the 1950s through to today?s armed forces ? 11 veterans (or active members or reserves) spanning every branch but the Coast Guard. Each panel details their time in uniform as well as when and why they decided to get tattooed.

Some of the images, like those gracing Parker?s arm, represent the ?memorial? category of ink art that recall the fallen or a certain battle. Among military tattoos ? a tradition that sprouted among Navy sailors generations ago but now are commonplace among post-9/11 veterans ? are the other three classes: ?patriotic? (flags, eagles), ?spiritual? (a star, a cross, the Virgin Mary), and ?identity,? (a specific unit, battalion or division), according to Kristina Wells, the museum?s collections manager.

?There?s been an interesting evolution in what tattoos the military would even accept. Our Vietnam veteran in the exhibit and one of the other 1960s service guys who took part didn?t get their tattoos until they were in their 60s. It was less accepted by the military back then,? Wells said. ?If you were tattooed, you maybe wouldn?t even be accepted into the Army and Marines (during that era).?

Later, military regulations were relaxed, and banned tattoos on the neck and face.

The ink also once carried something of a ?hidden? code, especially in the Navy, according to the museum. For example, the image of a sparrow or swallow signified having traveled 5,000 or more miles. Tattoos of pigs or roosters were good-luck charms meant to prevent drowning because those animals often were carried in wooden crates, which would float if the ship ever sank.

For Parker, the tattoos also serve as a shorthand account of her combat experiences for any other veterans who spy them ? an ?automatic understanding? and a ?unifying symbol.? She said she and fellow veterans can read one another?s service history from their ink.

But for those who haven?t served, she said, there is often misunderstanding.

?I get a lot of people asking me if they?re my kids. That?s frustrating and hurtful,? Parker said. ?The female veterans, we?re so invisible. People don?t assume we?re veterans at all.?
